Wow, this is horrible news. How many African elephants are known to have died of EEHV/ how common is it to occur?

Unfortunately, it is currently a widespread and serious problem in the American captive population.

Woah, the whole population?! These are the first deaths that i think I’ve heard about African elephants from EEHV (I knew Africans carry it too, but unlike with Asian elephants with i’d never heard of a death from it before).

Hmm, come to think of it I'm not sure if any African elephants have succumbed to it before now. Several Asian elephants certainly have and it's a constant worry for that population. It's definitely transferable between the two species (but not with anything else).

Hemingway, a male bottlenose dolphin that is owned by the Georgia Aquarium was moved to the Indianapolis Zoo in October according to the MMIR. I am guessing a breeding recommendation! I am surprised that Brookfield did not have any movement of this sort as well.

No, not him! He's one of the more genetically valuable bulls! Send every vet in the country at him if the AZA has to!

I am really, really seriously happy and contented over this!!!

Aside: very, very glad that zoo and vet management are finally getting to grips with the herpes disease elephant "dragon". After years of struggling with the rapid onset of the disease in juvenile elephants leaving staff and vets virtually helpless and clueless how to engage the disease, better and rapid screening and large scale intravention therapy - from this year onwards - seems to have brought heaps of progress and a giant step forward in elephant herpes treatment therapy.

This is not just important for the African - and seemingly all the more so - as well as for the Asiatic species. Whereas previously the disease was thought only to affect the Asiatic species that myth has finally been broken.

Jesus. This strain is just ripped through the poor zoo's animals. Fingers crossed for a swift recovery for Zahara. Given her age and the fact that it's been 11 days since symptoms first started, I'm certain she'll pull through just fine though.
