IT’S a girl! Dokkoon delivered a healthy baby early this morning to give Melbourne Zoo its first baby elephant.

She is only the second elephant born in Australia, and entered the world safely at 1.10am.

Very good news thats it's a girl. A big congratulations to all the Melbourne zoo elephant team.

There were some that said only males are born using AI so I guess this proves AI IS a useful breeding tool.

Another step forward for the ARAZPA Asian elephant breeding programme.

Eat your heart out Greens and PETA-ists ... You have been disproven again (ouch that hurt)!

Well done Melbourne zoo elephant staff. Dragon(ele) nerd and phoenix get your cameras out and get to the zoo.
I hope the little one has a healthy and happy life.

I just got back from the zoo! not going to be on display for a while ( as usual) the keeper was showing a picture of her. Very dark in colour and hairy.

Why are all elephants born in AU being put in slings? I wonder if this bub was taken away from Dokkoon like Luk chai was taken away straight away?

There were some short videos on the TV news and she did look really hairy and really dark.

And by the way I'm secretly (or not so secretly now that I'm putting it on the internet) really glad that it's a girl just 'cos Taronga doesn't have one. :)

I'm glad too. Now in a few years Taronga will have a girl sent from Melbourne to mate with their young bull. Keep the girls coming Melbourne. We'll take all you can produce for young Luk Chai's harem.:p:p

I would think that the girls will stay put with the herd with any bulls being sent to the females as they do in Europe ;)

I am hoping when more babies are born most of them turn out to be females that would really set the region up for a good breeding program
