I lived in a suburb of Jackson from 1969-1989 and again from 1993-1998 and have been back many times since because I had family there until a year ago. I watched the area around the zoo thrive then decline then die. The roads around the zoo are in very bad condition, and the area is plagued with poverty, gangs, and crime. For the sake of the city, I hope the zoo stays where it is and becomes the cornerstone of rejuvenation, but that is very unlikely. For the sake of the zoo, I hope it moves. LeFleur's Bluff (mentioned in the article) is probably the best location within the city limits, and that park already has a nice science museum. If the zoo location was not limited to the city (which is almost unthinkable since it is primarily funded by the city), there is plenty of land just outside of town that would be ideal. Perhaps the city could annex some new land and build a whole cultural complex with the zoo as the centerpiece. But of course, that takes money that the city does not have right now.
