It is said that three young jaguars were moved to Austria last Nov/Dec. But there are no new jaguars in one of the Austrian zoos. Any ideas where the jaguars were moved to last year?

Great! We need more small cats in zoos.

Last Monday a 3-year old female Dromedary camel named Greta arrived from Tierpark Berlin. The other female (Arabella) that was already present at the park arrived with her daughter from Zoo Berlin at Dessau in 2019, sadly her daughter (Samina) passed away last April. Tierpark Dessau now has 0.2 dromeday camels.

In February 19,5 year old melanistic male Jaguar (Panthera onca) Paco was euthanised. He arrived from Zoo Dortmund in 2002.

In February 2 Geoffroy's marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) were born.

In May 3 Western Siberian Eagle-owls (Bubo bubo sibiricus) hatched, the first time for Tierpark Dessau!

In July 2 Laughing Kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae) were send to Limpopo Zoo. On the same day another Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) and a Prevost's squirrel were send to Novosibirsk Zoo.

In November the zoo supporting association "Tierparkfreunde Dessau e.V.' raised enough money to get a pair of Ussuri black bears (Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) to the zoo from Russia! This will be a new species for the Tierpark Dessau. Currently (09/12/2021) the zoo is trying the get the bears into Germany, but that requires alot of paper work and some time.

A decision to regret given the fact that both Indian sloth bear and Sun bear programs seek new holders.

At the end of last year the pair of Ussuri black bears (Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) arrived from Russia.

At the start of this year multiple Asian Giant Forest Scorpions (Heterometrus Petersii) hatched.
The first Eurasian harvest mice (Micromys minutus) have also been born.

True. However, given that Dessau Zoo is not a large zoo the choice for Ussuri black bears is understandable.

Yeah, Ussuri black bears don´t need any heating during winter so they are much cheaper option for smaller zoos with limited investment and operational budgets than Malays and sloth bears.

At the same time, if they would offer space for surplus Carpathian brown bears from overcrowded rescue stations instead, they would do some good and simultanously could use that point for their fundraising campaign.

@Jana, I admit and would hope that would be a strategy for the European brown bear EEP. We are dealing too many rescuees and then not doing anything for their species right now.

Last monday female Dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) Greta (*2018, Tierpark Berlin) was send to Tiererlebnispark Mueritz where she will hopefully mate with male Akim, after which she will return to Tierpark Dessau.

Sadly the last two Sunda pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were euthanised last week. The health of both the more than 24 years old male Horts and the 20 year old female Kathi
    deteriorated, thus they were euthanised.

On the 4th of May an Eurasian tawny owl (Strix aluco) hatched! According to the zoo this is the first time that this species has bred, but ZTL claims they breed regularly.

Recently male Northern yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula aterrima) Nikita was send Weißenfels Heimatnaturgarten (new species for this zoo). During the breeding season the male and female got along well and hopefully this will result in offspring. Since this would be the first young for both animals, they wanted to separate the two. In their current setup the female would still see the male which culd cause strees. In order to prevent this, the male would have to stay in a quarantine building, therefore was send to a different zoo.

Last Tuesday female South American coati (Nasua nasua) Nele escaped from enclosure which was damaged by a recent storm. Luckly she was captured yesterday.
