Jinan Zoo http://www.jinanzoo.com/ 36°42'6.78"N 116°58'56.07"E The city of Jinan in Shandong Province has an estimated 6.5 million inhabitants and several zoological facilities: In May 1960 the Jinan Zoo was opened in Jinnui Park. On an area of 60 ha it has a large animal population, including Snub-nosed Monkeys, Giant Pandas, Asian & African Elephants, White Rhinos, Giraffes, etc. In Sept. 1996 Jinan Zoo acquired the Lowland Gorilla "Willie" from Barcelona Zoo. In the same year 1.0 Asian Elephant was born (the young bull later entered the Badaling Wildlife Park). On May 28th, 2004 another Asian Elephant is born (the young animal dies already on Jan. 20th, 2007). The third elephant birth was announced by the Zoo on Sept. 7th, 2010. As early as 2008, there are voices suggesting a relocation of the City Zoo. By the way, there were similar considerations in Kunming and Beijing. With regard to the recreational value of the zoo for the population, a relocation of the zoo has not been pushed any further. Instead, the zoo is to be renovated and modernised over the next few years. A new Rhino House was opened in 2018. Jinan, Paomaling Wildlife World 36°25'41.22"N 117°13'6.95"E www.jnysdwsj.cn On Sept. 26th, 1999 this large zoo was opened with great expectations 40 km south of Jinan in the Happy Valley Area. In this time the animal population included rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, oryx Antelopes, yaks, white-lipped Deer, takins as well as monkeys, tigers, lions, cheetahs, snow leopards, bears and wolves. But due to the fact that the park is difficult to reach, it was decided in 2013 to move a large part of the livestock to a new site near Zhangqiu City. On April 26th, 2016 the 179 ha Jinan Wildlife World was opened there. Although the Jinan, Paomaling Wildlife World is located in a scenically beautiful region (see Google Maps) the park is probably not easy to attract enough visitors as the animal population has been reduced considerably. During the 1 - 2 km long visitor trail you can now see bears, tigers, snow leopards, yaks, alpacas, ponies and peacocks. It is to be hoped that the park will be able to remain attractive for many visitors, especially as the other two zoos in Jinan have much larger animal populations. Jinan, Wildlife World www.jnysdwsj.com/ 36°36'57.60"N 117°27'25.73"E the 179 ha zoo is located 35 km east of Jinan next to the Botanical Garden. The northern part of the park can be visited on foot, while the southern part can be crossed by train. The zoo has a large animal population: in 2014 9 giraffes, 2 hippos, 6 white rhinos and 10 cheetahs arrived at the zoo. In April 2016 another 36 giraffes were imported from Africa and on Oct. 26, 2017 the Giant Panda Hall was opened and occupied by 2 giant pandas. In 2016/17 the zoo acquired 1,1 orangutans.
