This is generally true (Timor-Leste aside :D ) - but I think it's mostly simply because French zoos are overall the most like the familiar British ones in design - and they're generally not particularly rich in species you can't see in the UK either (mid-size zoos in both are prone to being a bit EEP-y - perfectly valid, but less likely to prompt an international trip..!). That said, I did a Loire Valley zoo trip a couple of years back and it was great.

I see your point, wasn't aimed at you per se but just as an observation of a more general trend :p
Fair enough on the new species point - although in my mind a select few French zoos are both more interesting and/or, put simply, better than, for example, Krefeld or Barcelona or Hanover. But that is just my opinion :).

People go to Germany more than Krefeld or Hanover. There are a lot of good zoos nearby. France got Beauval, Doue and that's basically it.

Oh, I know, I just find the topic interesting!

I think 'a select few' is where the issue lies here..! You quote Krefeld - you wouldn't travel to Krefeld from Britain on its own - there'd also be Duisburg, Wuppertal, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Osnabruck (and more) - all without having to move base.

Barcelona has a different allure - unlike Doue (or Krefeld), it's in the middle of one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world. (I suspect Rome (the zoo) is 'over-visited' by nerds for similar reasons!)

This is basically it - if you want a trip of big-hitter zoos close to each other, France is not the easiest place to contrive it. Germany, Czechia, Netherlands - really easy!

Definitely true about Krefeld, although Hanover is slightly more puzzling. But even so, why then do places like la Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes not receive nearly as many visits as places like Lisbon, Barcelona or Rome do you think?

I don't blame them, anything to avoid France ;):p

Though they would miss out on Doué

Well, let's be honest - most of this thread has somewhat diverged from the original point :p but more because of people using it as a place to post random animal-name puns rather than actual jokes or references *only* a Zoochatter would understand, and not so much the posting of memes.

    So you're probably safe.

I just want to say that I whole hardily agree that this thread has completely shifted from what I had originally intended. Animal jokes are fun, but I was hoping for stuff regarding ZooChat itself or very niche jokes about certain zoos that only a zoo nerd would get. There is still some of that, but it comes few and far between various animal puns and jokes.

If it's not too much of a hassle (considering there are nearly 500 posts in this thread), would it all be possible to split the animal name puns and jokes from the actual jokes only a zoochatter would understand?

I've already done this to some extent since posting the above - that's why we now have an Animal Jokes/Puns thread :p

I got an email about someone posting that the thread went in the unintended direction, so I literally just logged back on to delete my last post when I saw my alert that said it got deleted for spam. I am so sorry I posted that.
