Has anyone got any news on the 2year old elephant orphan 'Jummaane'? What a sad story he must be devastated as the picture shows in the Sunday Times. Hope he is okay
Yoki's death was reported on the Elephant Encyclopaedia last week, I think? Not much on there tho, about her or Jumaane: Yoki, an African Bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) at Sosto Zoo (Nyiregyhazi Allatpark) Jumaane is the last elephant at the zoo - hopefully he'll be sent somewhere with other elephants or a young playmate can be found.
Just had another look at Ele Encyc and it appears that the zoo has been very quick to source three older Asian elephant females from Terra Natura, Benidorm So, although not African, they'll provide Jumaane with the company he needs.
Jumaane and the three Asian females are living two separate enclosure in the Sosto Zoo, so Jumaane has been lonely still. Probably a young African male will be arrived to Sosto in the near future and he will be the friend of Jumaane. (the three Asian elephants will be showed to the visitors only next April, when the Green Pyramid will be open)
Was at this zoo in late May, 2012. This is one of the few zoos where I have seen both African and Asian elephants in separate exhibits.
