Surprise at Klein Costa Rica. In the bird-hall the Green iguanas have produced eggs unnoticed by the keepers. The place the female has chosen for the clutch was a good one and sofar 3 young iguanas have been found !
At Klein Costa Rica a rare butterfly - Papilio antenor - from Madagascar has hatched : https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1490496754301012
Next to the large freshwater-pond with loads of fish and some turtles Klein Costa Rica now also added a Marine aquarium of 7000 liters : https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=812329315912864
From Oct. 30 2022 Klein Costa Rica will close its door definitive. Reason is health-problems of the owner. This is realy a pitty because the small park had a very nice collection of animals .
Very sad news indeed. Tomorrow I will visit the zoo for the first (and last) time. I'm going to try to take as many pictures as I can of this facility, and hopefully ask about what's going to happen to the animals here
A keeper mentioned that the majority of the animals (including the rarities: Hummingbird, Arapaima and Widowbird) will be moving to the Orchideeënhoeve in Luttelgeest. I've visited a few times before. It's a very nice butterfly garden (one of, if not the largest in the Netherlands) with multiple greenhouses, a nice collection of birds, and a wonderful flamingo aviary (with lemur islands) I really hope they'll create a large aquarium, or add underwater viewing to a larger pond, for the new fish. Klein Costa Rica has an incredible collection of exotic fish, including Iridescent shark catfish, Giant gourami, Tanganyika tilapia, Multiple species of Amazonian rays and Silver arowana. As well as two Pig-nosed turtles. De Orchideeënhoeve already has a group of Redtail catfish, that are held in a rather mediocre tank that isn't big enough to house all of the other species mentioned. They've had Arapaima before, though I can't say with certainty where they were held.
Klein Costa Rica's facebook revealed where all of the animals will be (or already have) going/gone. The Pied hornbills and Hummingbird have moved to "Tropical paradise", a private collection who has bred Hummingbirds before. The Meerkats have moved to "Stichting Carnivora", a shelter for exotic pets. The parakeets and Java sparrows will remain in Klein Costa Rica, which will continue to exist as a private greenhouse. All the other birds and reptiles have already moved to De Orchideeënhoeve, and the fish will be moving there too.
