Yesterday the female White-tailed Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) had laid her first egg, the eagle pair is still relatively young but hopefully the egg is fertilized. Source: Instagram of Langoed Honederdaell (11/03/2021) Login • Instagram
Yesterday their first egg hatched, hopefully in three days the other egg will hatch. Would this be the first time that this species has bred at the zoo? You can watch the nest live via this livestream: Livestream Source: Facebook of Langoed Hoenderdaell (16/04/2021) Landgoed Hoenderdaell
The zoo is also constructing a new otter enclosure, I persume it's for their Asian small-clawed otters. This enclosure is definitely an improvement from their old enclosure, which was as I recall it too small. Three days ago the other egg hatched, so there are now two White-tailed Sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) chicks. Source: Instagram of Landgoed Hoenderdaell (20/04/2021) https://www.instagram.com/p/CN29C8wqtcW/
The European white storks also have chicks, already 3 eggs have hatched. Source: Instagram of Landgoed Hoenderdaell (23/04/2021) https://www.instagram.com/p/COBANu_Kpz3/
Last Saturday evening Male tiger Brami (*2003) was euthanized, he suffered from heart problems. The zoo refers to Brami as a Bengal tiger, but I assume that he was a hybrid. Source: Instagram of Landgoed Hoenderdaell (31/05/2021) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPi3YvRqP79/
The old enclosure of the spotted hyaenas is being converted to the building for the dolphin rescue. The hyaenas now inhabit the former blackbuck enclosure. I guess the galagos are kept in the tropical house, but they weren't anywhere to see or signed today...
The last Golden-necked cassowary (Casuarius unappendiculatus) of Europe has died in Landgoed Hoenderdaell according to zootierliste.
That's sad news. It wasn't the last Casuarius unappendiculatus however, just the last Casuarius unappendiculatus aurantiacus, there's at least one cassowary of this species left in Walsrode and according to ztl maybe one in Portugal. By the way, the source given on ztl for the news of the animals death is Hoenderdall's Facebook page.
I can confirm Walsrode's C. u. rufotinctus was indeed alive, well, and posing for photos as of Thursday and Friday last week.
The zoo is currently working on an enclosure for Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti), this would be a new species for the zoo! According to one of the comments on this post, the zoo will also receive raccoons, not sure if they will be sharing this enclosure or if they get their own. Recently a King vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) hatched, which is getting hand fed. According to Zootierliste, Landgoed Hoenderdaell recently received 2 Brazilian porcupines (Coendou prehensilis), making it the second zoo in both The Netherlands and the BeNeLux with this species! The zoo itself announced the construction of a raccoon enclosure in November last year. I assume that these two species will not share their enclosure. Facebook Post
A view into the ( almost ) finished dolphin-rescue-center at the zoo ( in Dutch ) : https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1145898326201558
Although it has dolphin in the name it will serve mostly as a rescue and critical care center for harbor porpoises, with surviving animals re-released if possible.
Two snowleopards arrived at Hoenderdaell, they came from a recently closed zoo in the UK. They will be held off-show until the animals are used to the way of life at Hoenderdaell. If they stay there for the rest of their lives is unknown. They will move into the Persian Leopard enclosure. Log in or sign up to view
