That world list has popped up before. I have no idea what that place in Florida at number 9 is (update: it's a roadside menagerie and petting zoo). The Cape May Zoo in New Jersey is an obscure zoo that even most die hard zoo nerds here in North America have never visited.

For North America at least the list is a bit of a joke, although most people would probably accept San Diego, St. Louis, and Omaha as top tier zoos.

A totally meaningless list, akin to the cast of The Only Way is Essex voting on the top ten short chain oligosaccharides.

No real surprise London's absence, considering most of it is currently a building site!

Well done Colchester though...looks like the cast of TOWIE had their say eh SMR? ;)

It maybe a joke list but the Chester Zoo followers will think it's the best list in the world.

I'm currently on a 26 day/80 zoo trip through the southern states, and interestingly enough in motels I often browse through the brochures/pamphlets in order to see if there is a zoo map available for my collection. Anyway, Dallas Zoo heavily advertises itself as one of the top 10 zoos in America according to TripAdvisor, and Omaha has done the same in the past. Perhaps regular zoo visitors put faith in the TripAdvisor rankings, while most zoo nerds ignore them altogether. It seems as if some zoos are using the fame to their advantage.

I would actually agree that Dallas is top ten in USA. As I state in my southwest zoo book, it is the best zoo in the southwest US.

This list should be titled "most popular" rather than "best" or "top".

Why is Vienna listed so highly? Diversity, viewing, animal welfare? I'm in Vienna in October and although my time is limited, I could maybe squeeze in a morning or afternoon.

Vienna (Tiergarten Schonbrunn) is a really nice collection in my opinion. I visited it in April of this year and it does have lots of features that push it to be listed quite highly. It has both Koalas and Giant Pandas which for some reason (considering they're just balls of fluff that are usually asleep) are both popular with the average zoo visitor.
There aren't really any sub-standard enclosures that I thought were bad and many fantastic ones - in terms of viewing/visitor experience and animal welfare. Lots of nice rarities too.

I have written my thoughts on it here: https://www.zoochat.com/community/posts/866371 if you would like to read more.

I would rank it as the fourth best zoo in Europe that I have visited (after Walsrode and both Berlin collections) though I haven't visited either Loro Parque or Prague listed above it here.

Christ what do Blackpool feed their orang-utans?! With such obese animals how they made the list for the UK let alone Europe!

Because these are based on the general publics reviews, hence the stupidity of the list.

Schonbrunn is an excellent zoo and for me only surpassed by Walsrode :). And for sure it is a lot better than Loro Parque and I also prefer it over Prague. Even though the later is a very nice zoo as well.

I was thinking about this last night and, obviously, any 'top zoos' list in the world has more than an element of personal opinion and it is hard [nee impossible] to scientifically rate them and order them in the fairest way without any form of personal opinion. I'm sure everybody's list is different, if only slightly.

My top ten [of what I've visted], for example, are:

    1) Colonge Zoo
    2) Rotterdam Blidjorp
    3) Burger's Zoo
    4) Zoo Berlin
    5) Zoo Frankfurt
    6) Chester Zoo
    7) Tierpark Berlin
    8) Apenheul
    9) ZSL Whipsnade
    10) Stuttgart [Wilhelma]

And wow, that was difficult! I'm sure if I look again tomorrow even I won't agree with the list - as stated, there is a lot of personal opinion in there.

Yeah, my top 10 collections suffers the same plastic nature reliant on my mood and thought process on any given day I am asked :p

That said, if asked today I think my top ten would be something like the following:

    1) Tierpark Berlin / Zoo Berlin
    2) -------
    3) Wilhelma
    4) Alpenzoo / Chester Zoo
    5) -------
    6) Tierpark Hellabrunn
    7) Bristol Zoo / Cotswold Wildlife Park
    8) -------
    9) Zoo Magdeburg
    10) ZSL Whipsnade
