Hey I was just wondering how many giant squirrels Leipzig currently have and where are they located in the zoo?
A male Eastern quoll arrived from Frankfurt Zoo, a male from Leipzig was sent to Frankfurt. Some Kowaris, born at the zoo, were shipped to other zoos. Already 60 Chilean flamingos arrived to live at the new south american aviary. opening will take place in july. The first Lesser flamingo chick since 2008 hatched two weeks ago. 28 further eggs are left.
KUMILI's baby, born March 11th, 2014 is a female and got the name DIARA. Gorilla female VIRINGIKA is going to leave the zoo, because she does not accept KUMILI and her baby.
Three last year born Przewalski's horses were shippe to a paddock near Leipzig, a young female and 4 older females, all pregnant again, are left at the zoo. A Cinnamon ground-dove and a Sclater crowned-pigeon hatched, one Small flying fox was born at the New Birdhouse. Williams electric blue geckos and Crested wood partridges hatched at Gondwanaland. Two Yellow-billed storks arrived from Dresden Zoo. One young male Giant otter was shipped to Pairi Daiza, Belgium. A young Flase gharial, a pregnant Mexican lance-headed rattlesnake, a male Blacktip reef shark, one new born Grevy's zebra and two male Nile lechwes died. I doubt the flamingo aviary will be finished when I visit Leipzig in July, but in case I get lucky (there is the phenomenon of German efficiency after all), what species are gonna inhabit it other than Caribbean and Chilean flamingos?
The aviary will house Chilean flamingos, Scarlet ibis, Black-faced ibis and different kind of waterfowl.
As far as I know the Caribbean flamingos are out of the collection. Nowadays, they hold Chileans and lessers both in a separate flock (I am happy ... no hybrids).
Per my visit of April 7th 2014, the Caribbean flamingos are still in the collection, and mixed with the Chilean flamingos.
Chilean and Caribbean flamingos are living toether for at least 50 years, without any hybrid breeding. The last Caribbeans will leave the zoo soon to Tierpark Limbach-Oberfrohna.
...which is interesting! This is a funny little zoo, very close to Chemnitz (I came across it by accident when I got lost on the outskirts of Chemnitz), and while it does not have much to commend it right now (or at least didn't last summer), they were in the process of building a really pretty exceptional-looking thing for flamingos and various wading birds. The Liepzig birds must be on their way to populate this....
Some hatchings during the last weeks: - Purple honeycreeper - Black-crowned night herons - Veiled chameleons - Williams electric blue geckos
Two Asian wild horse foals were born. The new enclosure for Eastern black rhinoceros is going to be opened in March 2015. The rhinos will be co-housed with cheetahs.
