Auckland Zoo proudly announces the safe arrival of a baby leopold tortoise ( by virtue of birth ) Sex unknown . Mother and baby are doing well . Many thanks to the hospital staff .....

never seen one on exhibit at your local zoo ? It is because Auckland Zoo has the only ones in any zoo in Australasia . 2 females , 1 male and now a baby -?-
This species is listed in the dangerously threatened category ( or similar -- I am not sure of the exact wording )
For Jasons information ; The male was picked up and confiscated by Wellington Airport Customs/Agricultural officers . Exact place of birth unknown :)

The male was donated by a private owner and the 2 females were confiscated as babies by customs.

Rubbish about only ones in Australasia - leopard tortoise Stigmochelys (previously Geochelone) pardalis are (according to the unreliable ISIS) are at Auckland (1.2.19), Monarto (0.0.4), Wellington (3.3.0) and Werribee (0.0.5).

Considering that Nigels original post was in 2005, that may have been correct then.
