Just posted on the zoo facebook - their group of lesser flamingos started to lay eggs (5 so far) !!! There is a possibility we will see the very first lesser flamingo hatchling in the Czech rep.

As the pics show, Zlin probably got the inspiration for their breeding room in Fort Worth Zoo from the article in 2009 Flamingo bulletin. They reversed the harsh Central european winter with snow into a 35 degrees Celsius hot east african summer. Just a small cheap wooden cabin placed into their summer exhibit, heating, dirt and water. The birds will do the rest (they are allowed to incubate the eggs themselves).

Unfortunatelly, all 5 eggs´ve turned out to be infertille. One new egg is too fresh to tell yet...

So, the very first chick hatched on 13.February. The egg was in incubator and has returned when piping. This is the first breeding for the Czech republic. Unfortunatelly, vast majority of eggs laid in Zlin colony seem to be unfertile so far.

No, I don´t know. But their whole group is sitting on nests, so I guess at least one dozen eggs has been laid.
