Some interesting updates at the Regenstein Center today - on one window of the Chimpanzee exhibit, there's now a fairly opaque sticker over the entire viewing area. There are several cutouts across the bottom half to peek for visitors to peek through; have to wonder if this an attempt at creating some privacy as there's really very few spots for the chimps to get away when the doors to outside are closed. Also, one of the larger male chimps had a very large gash on his upper lip. At moments, particularly when he was eating, it was pretty painful to look at. Another interesting insight - apparently there's a fourth enclosure on the premises! This one apparently holds another troop of chimps that aren't usually visible to the public. One of the volunteers mentioned that I could request access if I wanted to photograph them as they're very interested and playful with new people observing them. Has anyone seen this other group of chimpanzees?
I've been aware there has been a hidden ape habitat on the North end of the building. I have never seen them myself, but if it were ever made for public access I would prefer if they brought in bonobos. Then they would have every African ape in their collection.
While it would be great for Lincoln park to get Bonobos, they would not have every African ape. They would be missing the Eastern Gorilla. So unless Antwerp has any plans to ship theirs to Chicago, I don't think LPZ will be getting every African ape anytime soon.
Thank you Moebelle for another well-produced walk-through! I'm impressed with the on-screen labeling of each species with an image of the animal that should be seen in each exhibit!
The zoo's website - here FAQs | Lincoln Park Zoo - lists the summer opening times as 10.00-5.00, but also mentions that the gates are open from 7.00 to 6.30. Does this mean that one can wander around the zoo during these extended hours, but that the various buildings will not be accessible? If so, presumably there is still a fair amount to be seen?
A native to the area should answer this but I'll throw in what I know. I do recall there being hours on the doors for their indoor attractions. I believe I saw Closed at 5PM on some of them but let's say that you can't access them - yes, the number of outdoor exhibits outweighs the indoor attractions. So more than a fair amount would be left to he seen.
The lions tend to stick around outside a little longer and you can certainly see the macaques without the usual crowds if you stay later. I haven't been there super early but you can definitely see a few animals after the buildings close.
