Omaha zoo announces names of 5 lion cubs

OMAHA (AP) — The Omaha zoo announced Friday morning the names of five African lion cubs selected through a contest on the group’s Facebook page.
The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium said that the boy cubs have been named Josiri and Taj. The females have been named Kya, Leela and Zuri.
Visitors to the zoo’s Facebook page were asked to suggest names, and zoo workers selected 10 female and 10 male African names from more than 5,000 submissions. Those names were then posted on Facebook for a final vote.
The zoo had an event Friday to celebrate naming the cubs. Each name chosen has an African meaning. Taj means crown. Josiri means brave. Kya means diamond in the sky. Leela means night beauty. Zuri means beautiful flower.
The cubs were born Dec. 29. They are becoming more playful as they grow up. The cubs are starting to jump, climb and run. Each weighs between 17 and 23 pounds, according to the zoo.
The cubs can be seen in the Cat Complex with their mom, Mfisha, and aunt, Ahadi.
People who submitted the winning names will receive an annual zoo membership or renewal, a lion-themed gift basket, an invitation to a light breakfast and a cat-training session. They will also be allowed to invite six guests to the demonstration. The winners are Janis Cazares, Rebecca Lowe, Denise Kollarth, Steve Barnes and Cianne Suhr.
