I'm making this thread because I'm a fan of felidae, especially rare local felidae like bay cat or marbled cat. I also create this thread to show the diverse felidae in Indonesian zoo. I'm also going to mention felidae that was no longer kept in any Indonesian zoos and also privately owned felidae (Of course not including normal cat). I'm going to mention one zoo that the felidae is currently and formerly kept. Currently kept * Sunda leopard cat (Prionailurus javanensis) at Faunaland * Asian golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) at Faunaland * Serval (Leptailurus serval) at Faunaland * Caracal (Caracal caracal) at Taman Safari Bogor * Cougar (Puma concolor) at Taman Safari Bogor * Jaguar (Panthera onca) at Taman Safari Bogor * Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) at Bandung Zoological Garden * African leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) at Taman Safari Bogor * Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) at Ragunan Zoo * Mainland clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) at Batu Secret Zoo * Sunda clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi) at Faunaland * Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at Ragunan Zoo * Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) at Bandung Zoological Garden * Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) at Batu Secret Zoo * African lion (Panthera leo) at Taman Safari Bogor Formerly kept * Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) at Gembira Loka Zoo * Bay cat (Catopuma badia) at Taman Safari Bogor * Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) at Batu Secret Zoo * Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) at Taman Safari Bogor * Snow leopard (Panthera uncia) at Taman Safari Bogor * Liger (Panthera leo x Panthera tigris) at Taman Safari Bogor Privately owned * Sand cat (Felis margarita) * Pallas's cat (Otocolobus manul) * Amur leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura) * Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis)
Nandito, I'm really enjoying your recent posts - they're very interesting, I enjoy the historical/'formerly-kept' updates too - a lot of it is news to me too. Well done, and keep it up! As a fellow felid enthusiast, I noticed that the Javan leopard I've seen in Ragunan, and the Sunda clouded leopards (at least the nominate subspecies) at Taman Safari Bogor aren't on your list.
I like this list, but it might be better if you could try to list all the zoos in which you know the species are currently kept (rather than just one zoo per species). Unless these animals were imported direct from Africa and India respectively, they are probably "generic" (i.e. hybrids between different subspecies).
They currently have two males that originate from Sumatra, though they’re behind the scenes from what I gather. Both arrived in 2014 if I remember correctly.
Unfortunately not, but I have the honest word from a mutual friend of myself and @TeaLovingDave who has access to the ZIMS database
There is a flat-headed cat in Indonesian zoos? Which zoo that own this cat? I don't remember seeing those in zoos in Java (I haven't been to any zoos outside of Java)
Probably in the past, but there is many Indonesian zoos that kept rare animals such as the marbled cat or the Siberut macaque, but they rarely published any info about them, focusing more on animals that are popular to general visitors. So I hope that Gembira Loka and Batu Secret Zoo still kept the marbled cats when I visit them on the future.
I pass on a recent news item on Kebun Binatang Bandung. The felid family is represented by 3 leopards, 2 Bengal tigers, 2 Sumatran tigers and 3 lions. Source: Waduh! Rusa Kebun Binatang Bandung akan Diumpankan ke Harimau, Pakan Menipis - Pojok Bandung Should be added to the list, I guess.
I would love to see the Amur leopard cat exhibited in Faunaland in the future. It's one of my favorite feline species!
Do you know if Ragunan Zoo have a permanent population of Sumatran tigers; or if they take in injured tigers and rehabilitate/release them like Taman Safari? Australia Zoo were lucky enough to receive a litter of three cubs from such wild born parents in 2008. Taronga Zoo had also signed an agreement with Ragunan Zoo to trade two giraffes for a pair of Sumatran tigers. The giraffes were sent; but Taronga sadly never received their tigers.
Just like Taman Safari, I think most Indonesian zoo have two Sumatran tiger population. The first are tigers that are rescued from the wild and will be released into the wild in the future. The second is a rescued tigers that permanently lives in zoo, either due to them being disabled (For example only having three or two legs) or them being a man eater. So I guess Ragunan both released and permanently keep the tigers.
Since Mr. Khan also keep this species, I think that's possible. They also have northern lynx (Lynx lynx lynx) off display as far as I can remember
Ah yes, I've seen his Northern lynx a couple of times on Instagram. He said that it will be exhibited in Faunaland in the future. Considering the small space of the place, it's kinda hard to find a place for it.
