Only SDZ has Royal Antelope now. Omaha also has owl monkey. They are also present in private collections. ~Thylo
Presumably the 4 places you've found so far with Geoffroy's cat. Depending on how many facilities from the second page of this thread still hold them, owl monkeys should be still be present in a handful of zoos: Have night monkeys gone night night from US zoos? The talapoins at Audubon were there until at least 2018, not sure of their status now.
This is a weird question, but how do these smaller facilities acquire such rare in captivity species?
Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure if they were asking about the facility that had the foxes or something else. I haven't been keeping track other than counting (I've been going through the 500+ page usda list and looking up all the exhibitors, putting them on a map) right now, but there's Special Memories of course, and two of the other 4 I remember: -Safari Zoological Park in Kansas -Jungle Encounters in Massachusetts Lack of morals, for the most part. Some of these animals aren't rare in reputable places because they're rare in the wild, it's more to do with the popularity with the general public, if the species needs to be in captivity, etc.
There was a discussion recently somewhere on the forum regarding Royal Antelope, and only 1 remains at SDZ if any.
"Lack of morals" while in a couple of isolated cases may be true, is a very accurate statement. Most of the species we think of rare in zoos are present in the exotic pet trade (which is MOSTLY legal). some quite commonly. The AZA frowns apon acquiring animals in this way, so their zoos don't usually get these animals, while small private zoos are free to obtain whatever they want.
Geoffroy's Cat appears to be relatively common in the pet trade. While rarer, I've also seen Leopard Cats for sale, as are Caracal, Serval, Fishing Cat, Sand Cat, and all the lynxes bar Iberian (obviously). ~Thylo
I meant species I have seen the Siberian and Carpathian subspecies of Eurasian for sale, however. ~Thylo
What is the status of pangolins in zoos? Last time I visited the Memphis zoo, earlier this year, they had been taken off display.
Depending on how much context you want, you might want to reference this thread that I linked here a while ago: I don't really know how the population is faring overall, although one of the zoos holding them published a video about their breeding success in February.
I believe Drill was asking about the 4 places that have Geoffroy's Cats. I am curious which collections have them also.
Yeah I saw that, too, and it's mentioned upthread. I don't know of any zoos with them, though. ~Thylo
