I am not sure if anyone as done a thread like this before but here goes.
Birdwatchers have lists of the species they see around so I thought lets have a thread on list of species we see in the zoos and around in the wild.
I know some of your lists will be massive but after the first list you just add the new species you have seen.
I will post my list up here if and when enough members show interest in it.
This is not a competition it's just to see who can see the most species and where.

    All the rules are simple

1 list the species and the zoo you saw it in

    no more rules

    simples

EDIT - At the momment just reply if you are interested in jioning in on this thread

    thank you

    Adrian

I am in the process of listing the species and subspecies I have photographed in zoos and the wild (only mammals for the moment, but will move onto birds and herps).

Hi Adrian, I'm glad I'm not alone in keeping lists; I would be interested to know roughly how many species are on your list.

I'm not really sure this idea will be particularly viable as a thread except for people who have only been to a few zoos. Some people on here have been to literally hundreds of zoos, many of which contain many hundreds of species (what's the Berlin Zoo got at the moment, something like 1500 species?). Can you imagine how long the species lists would be for members like bongorob, zoogiraffe or Maguari?

Just as a related thought, I wonder how many text lines one is allowed per post? And how many text lines per page of a thread?

Well that is why I plan to save the document on my computer as a PDF file when I'm ready (will be going to Bristol on Saturday, so will certainly wait until after that) and will attach the file to this thread :)

that would seem the best way to handle the lists I think, yes

(just would like to say, I have nothing against the idea of the thread as such, it just seemed like it would be extremely unwieldy) :)

I did say I was looking to see who was interested and I must say thank you Javan Rhino for the idea of the pdf file if anyone else has any good ideas on how to work this thread without using too much space then lets hear them.
I will also be putting mine in pdf file form now
I have only a few I must admit but as Chlidonias as said I would be very interrested in seeing how many Bongorob, Zoogiraffe or Maguari have on thier lists.
Also when you visit a zoo do you actually see all the species at that zoo or are some always missing.

Yes, I think those 3 members will have way over 50 pages depending on font size (and likely the rest) :p.

Edit: And that's a very nice list KC :D

I'm faring much better than I was 12 months ago, when all I had really were Chester and a couple of other places scattered. Now however, I have done more different collections in 12 months than I have in my whole life!

I only wish I had full notes from when I first started visiting zoo's but I don't,so I have probably seen alot of species that I'm not likely to ever see again but cannot prove that I've seen them!
As a result of this I can only confirm to having seen about 700 species or sub-species of mammals, and around 1,750 species or sub-species of Birds,Reptiles I have only seen around 450 species or sub-species,Amphibians will be about 200 species or sub-species,as for fish or inverts not a clue how many I've seen.

I do not keep a list, but having been to over 70 zoos and animal facilities in the last two decades, I am sure that number is quite high. I mean at San Diego Zoo alone you could get hundreds, maybe even a thousand, in one day.

Since my primary interest is wild cats, I will restrict my list to the felid species I have seen (full species - no need to list subspecies - but I will include color morphs).

TIGER (typical plus white plus golden tabby)
    LION (typical plus white)
    JAGUAR (typical plus black)
    LEOPARD (typical plus black)
    SNOW LEOPARD (typical)
    PUMA (typical)
    CHEETAH (typical plus king)
    MAINLAND CLOUDED LEOPARD (typical)
    SERVAL (typical and white)
    CARACAL (typical)
    ASIAN GOLDEN CAT (typical)
    FISHING CAT (typical)
    EURASIAN LYNX (typical and white)
    CANADIAN LYNX (typical)
BOBCAT (typical - seen in the wild and in zoos)
IBERIAN LYNX (typical - seen in the wild only)
    OCELOT (typical)
    MARGAY (typical)
    ONCILLA (typical)
    GEOFFROYS CAT (typical and black)
    JAGUARUNDI (red and gray)
    PAMPAS CAT (black)
    PALLAS CAT (typical)
WILDCAT (typical, but subspecies appearance varies)
    BLACK FOOTED CAT (typical)
    JUNGLE CAT (typical and black)
    LEOPARD CAT (typical)
    SAND CAT (typical)
    RUSTY SPOTTED CAT (typical)

Arizona Docent has written a very long list of cat species. Over the years, I've seen the same number of wild cats, but I've seen an African wild cat and I've never seen an Iberian lynx. Arizona Docent was lucky to see one.

I visited Rotterdam Zoo at the same time it had flat-headed cats, but I don't remember seeing them. The marbled cats were off show when I visited Howletts, but I've heard rumours that the RSSC at Sandwich has marbled cats, as well as falanoucs - an anteater-like Madagascan civet.

I have two separate lists - one for species I've photographed, covering all animals from mammals and birds to inverts, and a proper mammal life list (including a few species I've seen but not photographed). The photo list is nowhere near up-to-date (I really need to sort that), but the mammal life list is attached.

It includes my annual 'spots' for 2005-2011 so far (anything with no checks in these columns I havent seen since 2004 or earlier), and questionable IDs or subspecies are generally given as the zoo treats them if there was any doubt - several of the subspecies listed are not currently recognised as valid but I always note them down unless I specifically believe them to be wrong (rather than just lumped!). It doesn't list the zoos I saw them in (and some were wild!) but if there's anything people are interested in just ask!

Thanks Maguari. That's an interesting, well-organised list.

I'll try and look through it and list any species that I've seen and that aren't on the list.

RSCC may get marbled cats in the future but do not have them yet (as far as I know - if I am wrong someone please tell me). Flat-headed cats are now being housed and possibly bred at one or two zoos in Thailand.

Do Zoo Negara (KL) still have Flat-headed Cats? That's where I saw my first and only individuals of this species, back in 2000.

566 for me, I only count mammals because I can't remember every bird, reptile, amphibian, fish and invertebrate I've seen.

Probably seen more mammals than that when I was younger. May have even seen the mountain gorilla at London in 1963, but I was six and don't remeber seeing any gorilla, never mind that species.

With all the other classes I only know those I successfully photographed plus a few others which I can remember such as greater bird of paradise, great billed-parrot and musk duck.

Hoping to see Pallas' long-tongued fruit bat, European beaver and water shrew for the first time this weekend.

I'll try and post my mammals list as an attachment tomorrow.

My list is looking quite weak at the moment :p - however I'm suprised you haven't seen European beaver yet Bongorob - I know they are elusive but thought you'd have spotted one on your travels, saw my first at Wildwood a couple of weeks ago, it's the best bet for them I've seen as there is glass viewing into the den, so even inside they are visible :).

Simply because I've not visited anywhere that keeps them yet.
