Ahhh - think I've been to 3 collections with them (Edinburgh, Highlands and Wildwood) - only successful in seeing any at the latter :)

While my list certainly pales in comparison with all others so far, the diversity in NZ zoos, and the few Australian zoos I've visited, certainly doesn't match that of Europe and America, so I'm pretty happy with it.

So far I have seen 157 mammal species, 253 bird species, and 125 reptile species. (I have cheated a little bit with a couple of entries where the animal had died before I saw it, eg. leatherback turtle :D). I haven't done an amphibian list yet, but it is currently probably less than 10 species anyway.

I think that's cheating more than just a little bit!! :D

    Awwwww.

Well, I wasn't going to put every stuffed animal I have ever seen on the list, but I thought I would count the leatherback, as I'm probably not going to see another one. Just realised I haven't put the beached whales I have seen on the list, so this is actually the only cheating... :D

Interesting idea... on related note, Bronx Zoo is a haven for wild birds and other animals, as are some other large zoos within cities; over 250 wild bird species have been recorded there. I've worked there for many years and have seen the majority; also a dozen or so herp species and a surprising range of mammals, including (recently) coyotes and a beaver! Mink, gray fox in the past, even pine voles which are rare elsewhere. I'll try to add details if anyone is interested, Frank

So, one year on, just though I would update my species lists, which have grown significantly since http://www.zoochat.com/2/my-most-awesome-world-zoo-tour-235130/. I have now seen 567 mammal taxa, 966 bird taxa and 508 reptile taxa.

I want to rework my lists so that subspecies are seperated from species (and can then give a species rather than taxa count), and that genera are arranged taxonomically (or at least by subfamily) within families rather than alphabetically, but that will take me quite a while I think. Also I still have to start my Amphibian lists.

that's some nice listing there zooboy28, although I'm surprised you don't have Brother's Island tuatara and Auckland Island teal. With waterfowl being a big interest you really should have visited Blackbrook or one of the Wildfowl Trusts when in England!

Also the NZ fantail is R. fuliginosa (albiscapa is the Australian grey fantail) ;)

Thanks, they have taken me about two months to do, so I'm glad its not just me who likes them. :)

Thanks also for pointing that out, I want to keep these lists as up-to-date and error free as possible, but that won't always be easy.

Where are the teal and tuatara kept? I can't honestly remember seeing either anywhere.

I've seen the tuatara at Orana (waaay back, they don't have them any more) and the Southland Museum's tuatarium, and also wild (introduced) on Somes Island in Wellington Harbour (you should go there in summer to see them). Victoria University should still have loads of them (I thought you might have seen them there at some stage).

Auckland Island teal at Orana (don't think they still have them), Willowbank (still has them) and I think I saw them at Wellington a couple of decades ago. I may have seen them at Mt. Bruce at some stage as well. They are around in quite a few places, I'm surprised Auckland Zoo doesn't have them actually.

Does Otorohanga have Campbell Island teal? I see they list them on their website.

No ARAZPA institutes listed for either the teal or tuatara in 09, so looks like I gotta get me down to Willowbank and the Tuatarium at some stage. According to my http://www.zoochat.com/17/otorohanga-kiwi-house-bird-park-review-224712/ they do have Campbell Island Teal, I guess I forgot to add them in to my lists.

sorry zooboy28, don't rush off to Willowbank just yet! I rechecked and the teal at Willowbank are actually Campbell Island teal and regular brown teal, not Auckland Island teal. Now I'm left wondering where does still keep Auckland Island teal because no-one seems to list them anymore on their websites!! They used to be kept several places, as a test species before Campbell Island teal were first brought in for breeding.

I agree nice list! But I too am surprised that if you live in New Zealand that you don't do some of the great Whale/Dolphin watches available to your country. I was able to see Hector's Dolphins one day and Dusky Dolphins and Sperm Whales a second day (both off the south island). These are species I never thought I'd see, and probably never would unless I was in New Zealand (specially the Hectors!).

I scanned through your list and found one big surprise, so you have to tell me where you saw it and if it's still there!! The pen-tailed tree-shrew (Ptilocercus lowii)!! I believe everything else on your list I've seen..not much in American Zoos that I haven't seen, I've made sure of that haha.

zooboy28 has an aversion to seeing animals in the wild :p

Seriously, a whale trip from Auckland should get him Bryde's whale at the very least.
