It appears the Hunters of the Sky displays have now finished , with the area now being covered with a circus big top as it prepares for Za Ji Acrobatics between April and September. There are two Emu in the enclosures that held hunters of the sky birds (See gallery).

The stingrays have eight babies in a nursery pool, that is situated within the main pool.

The east Africa reserve was empty as work was being carried out, putting in a new fence between the reserve and the giraffe/zebra house.

Anne was out in her new home, and work is continuing to develop the paddock, with the bottom half of it electrically fenced off. She was looking particularly arthritic in the cold weather.

One of the Tigers has been operated on recently (see gallery), though it was out with the other three.

I am presuming that the contract with the Hawk Conservancy to run the "Hunters of the Sky" display has come to an end ? (I know it is certainly not a cheap contract, but still) A real shame because it was a first class display and very popular.

I'm thinking dinosaurs (as I don't think they've had them yet).

Could well be a possibility as many other zoos have found them popular with the general public!

There is some good improvement in Anne's muscles and weight

Time for the big weigh in. We are happy to say at 3,610kg and with the muscle improvements we are really happy with Anne’s weight, we just need to do the same for some of the elephant team now! As many of you know when Anne arrived she was overweight and over the years during her time here we have tried to reduce the fat and build the muscle, all as part of a strict programme of exercise and rehab. We didn’t get scales until late 2011 and initially we saw an increase in overall weight as her muscle mass developed and then the focus switched to reducing her body fat. Dieting an elephant is not something you can do overnight, especially when that elephant has the orthopedic problems Anne has. Anne is still not quite where we want her to be and we continue to develop her muscle tone and condition to support her core muscle groups which will support her arthritis, whilst dropping the weight so she doesn’t have to carry so much mass on her failing joints. Saying that though she is still no where near where a wild elephant should be so the programme carries on. It is a mammoth task.

There was sad news about Turlough the male tiger

It is with great sadness we have to tell you about the death of Turlough, our beautiful male Amur tiger.
At 19 years and 4 months Turlough was the oldest Amur tiger in the UK having lived at Longleat since 2011.

Turlough was a much loved member of the Longleat family. He was a fantastic tiger to work with – from the moment the keepers entered the house in the morning he was at the front of his pen waiting to greet everyone. He was an excellent companion to the female tigers within the section, strong willed enough for the girls to know their place within the hierarchy but always able to show compassion and friendliness whenever possible. He not only touched the hearts of many of our guests, creating magical memories that will last for many years to come, but also endeared himself to all of the keepers that were lucky enough to work with Turlough.
Over recent months we had become increasingly concerned about Turlough’s health. A series of tests revealed he was suffering from a degenerative spinal illness. Although keepers and our veterinary team had been treating him with pain relief and palliative care, the difficult decision was made to put Turlough to sleep.
Our three other female tigers who shared the enclosure with Turlough will remain within the park and are in good health but will be monitored by keepers over the coming week to see how they react to the loss of their friend.
    RIP Turlough.

Not a lot to report from my visit yesterday, there is a new Giant Anteater baby (think its a female) who was 10 days old yesterday. She was on the back of her mother in the outdoor enclosure and then shut inside the rest of the day, still very small!

Didn't get a good look at Anne as she was indoors however the enclosure looks decent.

Thanks for taking the time to post these updates Jed Cullinan.

JamesB/Jed, is there public access to Anne's indoor enclosure?

I'm afraid no. Anne's new house is private to her so there will be no public access. only the keepers and vet can access there. you already know that Anne is now managed in a new system called a protected contact where you don't go in with the elephants like Anne
