The April 2014 Zoo Commission Minutes have been posted:

A few highlights, the zoo will be receiving a Giant Anteater and the birth of a baby Colobus Monkey. No word on where the anteater is coming from.

Cool news about the anteater. When was the last time that LA had an anteater? There hasn't been one since 1997 at least.

 

Will the anteater go on exhibit in the new Rainforest of the Americas complex, or is this unknown at the time? If it will be in ROTA, I can only imagine that they'd either create a new exhibit or put it in with the tapirs and tamarins.

 

They are building a new jaguar exhibit in ROTA. My guess is that the anteater will go somewhere in the old South America section, but I really don't know.

It seems like the tapir and tamarin exhibit would be too small for anteaters also.

 

I've heard about the new Jaguar exhibit.
I haven't visited the new complex (obviously) so thanks for letting me know that the tapir/tamarin exhibit is too small. The photos suggested that, but I wasn't quite sure.

Fantastic news - it is nice to see that Los Angeles is getting some species back after sending gerenuk, peccaries and rock-wallabies across to Berlin.

 

Vicunas! How nice! They're relatively uncommon in North American zoos, aren't they?

 

I suspect that Tierpark is just the assembly point. It is however a very nice addition to US/AZA zoos!

Capital Projects to be completed by June 30, 2015. That includes the new Jaguar exhibit.

The hatching of a Tawny Frogmouth.

The June 2014 Commission Minutes have been released. Some highlights include:

Excavation and grading for the Jaguar exhibit has begun; expected completion is December 2014.

The birth of Babirusa triplets.

The zoo will receive Scorpion Mud Turtles that were confiscated.

The recently born Giant Otter pups were killed by their young mother.

Babirusa triplets? Interesting as the mother only has two teats!

 

Completion in December? That's pretty fast for this zoo as I am mentally preparing myself for it to be pushed back. Of course, it's not a super huge construction project.

I'm hoping to tour the new exhibit January 2015 so hopefully it will be built by then. Everything should be half grown in by then too.

 

Los Angeles Zoo traded 7 Komodo Dragons in exchange for 42 native Australian reptiles with Taronga Zoo. 1/3 of the new reptiles will be sent to other zoos across America, while the rest will go on display in The LAIR after a 3-month quarantine.
