To set something straight about raising the pandas. It´s not true that one pup has been taken to be 100% handraised. Or even both as has been suggested in some international pressreleases. On the contrary, the mother is still very much in the picture. But because they think 2 pups is to much for her to handle, she only has 1 pup at a time. The pups take turns in mommy-time. Every 4 or 5 hours the pups are swapped. This way both pups have contact with mom, and they can also be thoroughly checked during their ¨hand-raising-hours¨. (this is why there is always only 1 pup on display. Mom and pup number 2 are off display.

@kifaru; The female rhino is now indeed living in the renovated old gaur-enclosure. (stupid decision to get rid of the gaurs by the way)

The female Giant Anteater born in December 2010 was moved to Blackpool Zoo on the 13th March. Her parents are still at Madrid (Andina was born to Calima X Zeke).

We are going to have new species in Madrid in so little time: the great giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the exhibitions of clawless asian otter (Aonyx cinerea) is going to be the outdoor exhibition and the meerkat exhibition is going to be the indoor exhibition. Meerkats are going to be moved to the old exhibition of marabou stork that is between bongo and african savannah for giraffes, zebras, gnous and ostrichs.

Now we've got two new species. In the Naturaleza Misteriosa Reptilary, we've got pig-nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta) and in the aviary we've got the livingston's turaco

Giant otters will arrive to Madrid zoo in September. The new exhibit is already built, but the outdoor enclosure needs some fixes like plants and fake rock (Don´t know if this will be done in the end or if the exhibit will remain as it is now)

Yeah, a beautiful new inhabitant for the zoo, but now, we are angry because of the new golden and white tigers that have been took for the zoo instead of try to take here sumatran, indochinese or siberian tigers more endangered subespecies
