A photo by bigfoot410 made at the Bronx Zoo ( http://www.zoochat.com/547/magellanic-penguin-young-465213/ ) made me think about the captivy situation of this species. I remember having it seen at Beekse Bergen many years ago but could't think of other places where I could have seen this species. Zootierliste learned me that at the moment it is kept at only 9 (!) European collections and none can be found in for example the Netherlands, Belgium or France. Also the list of former keepers of the species is relative short ! Because the species is still not threatened ( listed as being Near Threatened by the IUCN ) I was wondering if the species is more common in other regions ( North America ( at least the Bronx has them ), Asia, South America ). Any help is appriciated !
Concerning the AZA, the Penguin TAG is deliberately keeping Magellanic penguins at a smallish population size, because the focus among Spheniscus right now is African penguins. Holders: Aquarium of the Pacific Blank Park Zoo Bronx Zoo Cincinatti Zoo Jacksonville Zoo John Ball Zoo San Francisco Zoo SeaWorld San Diego Shedd Aquarium Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium Potter Park Zoo Zoo Boise According to San Francisco Zoo's Facebook page, they have the largest American population (54 if I recall correctly).

I don't believe there are any. The only non-AZA penguins that I'm aware of are gentoo penguins and African penguins.
Once, I think it was at a North American Zoo, some Magellanic Penguins started swimming endlessly at roughly the same time of year that their annual migration would be, and even walked in circles around the pool when it was drained for cleaning. I read about it in one of those kids magazines. Does anyone know where this was (sorry for being a bit off topic)?
