    Manatee born in Odense Zoo.

A caribbean manatee was born in Odense Zoo on June 2nd. The mother is imported from Guyana and this is the fifth young born at the zoo since 2001. Unfortunately, two of those were stillbirths, but Odense Zoo has already proved to be major contributers to the European manatee population.

It is also reported that another female is pregnant and due to give birth soon.

EDIT: Thanks for correcting me Yassa!

    Amazing news from Odense

Great news from Odense Zoo everyone! Today (June 30th.) a pair of manatee twins was born in Odense Zoo, Denmark. This has only happened once before in Europe (Beuval, 2003).
Now eight manatees lives in Odense, two of them being previous offspring and three of them born within the last month. There are so many babies in the pool now that sometimes even their mothers gets them mixed up:p
This means that Odense Zoo is slowly becomming a true breeding factory for manatees in Europe with five healthy babies born since 2003 and two stillbirths.

When you say the manatees came from Guyana you mean that they came from a breeding center or they are captured?

@Toddy. Nuremberg zoo has had two twin births of manatees, the first one in april 1986, both calfs could be raised, the second a few years later.

    Zorro moves to Germany

The six-year old male manatee "Zorro" has just moved from Odense Zoo to Nürnberg Zoo. Zorro was the first manatee born in Odense Zoo back in 2003 but now the zoo has bred so many manatees that space was becomming an issue (even though the pool is quite large). Odense Zoo had eight manatees prior to Zorros departure and three of those were born in 2009. The remaining seven are still doing fine in their spacious pool.

Does anyone can tell me something about manatees captive in Berlin Tierpark/Zoo? I already know that there are 4 adult animals (2.2), which haven't been breeding so far.

@Euthrix: take a look at the gallery of the Tierpark Berlin or do a google search #manatees #tierpark berlin to get a general idea of the exhibit. It offers visitors to observe the animals both under and above the water.

The manatee exhibit at Tierpark Berlin was built in 1994 within the pachyderm house. In my personal opinion, its design is rather prosaic and dowdy. Under the previous director, the nutrition of the manatees included vegetables, but also grain, leading to rather obese specimens. Let's see whether the new director will change the diet regime, as suggested by the keepers.

2017 update on the European manatee population? Since this thread began, the number of institutions holding manatees has increased from 7 to 10. It seems that 2 of the 3 new holders only have males, though.

    Arnhem Burgers (since 1988): 1.1
    Tierpark Berlin (since 1994): 2.1

    Odense (since 2001): 2.5
    Randers (since 2003): ?
    Madrid Faunia (since 2007): ?

    Genova Aquarium (since 2009): 2.1.1
Vincennes Zoo, Paris (since 2014): 2.0
    Wroclaw (since 2014): 2.0
