It will be a substantial part of the current zoo map. Alan Roocroft provided advice and overseen training in Cleveland Zoo.

It’s been reported that male sun bear Umekichi has been displaying symptoms similar to epilepsy and is currently under observation. Poor little guy, I hope he is going to be okay and that whatever it is can be managed well for him.

Thankfully there are no fatalities. The only concern I would have would be disease.

The zoo intends to phase out/give away around thirty animal species before 2050 the park's 100th anniversary. Species to be phased out include spotted hyena, celebes crested macaque, timber wolf, and harbor seals. At the same time the zoo want to make a new exhibition for South American animals, and animals native to Hokkaido.

I thought they already had a specialisation on northern / temperate species?
Do we have a species and exhibit listing for Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo?

I think they have the species for the South American and Hokkaido animals. I think that they just want to make renovations/improved exhibitions.

also here is a list of animals as of April 29 2017

After 11 years of absence the Maruyama zoo has Asian elephants again. The 1.3 elephants arrived from Myanmar after the elephant enclosure was refubished to suit Western standards. The park made research on elephant husbandry in Scandinavia.

The elephants will make their debut to the public at spring

It seems more zoo's in Japan are coming off the fence and modernise facilities and expand exhibits and being more nature based interpretations!

Since 2007, the zoo, which opened on Sept. 15, 1951, has been considerably modernised. In 2000, the zoo opened a modern chimpanzee house with outdoor facilities. In 2008 a facility for wolves followed and in 2010 the massively walled 525 sqm large facility for Hokkaido brown bears. 2011 followed the renewed Reptile House.

The Asia Zone was built on the site of the former amusement park in 2012. The 10,000 sqm site includes facilities for Amur Tigers, Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, Himalyan Black Bears, Malay Bears and Gibbons. Finally, the Africa Zone was opened on 31 October 2015. Giraffes, zebras, hyenas, ostriches, lions and hippopotamuses now live in two large building complexes with outdoor facilities.

The zoo discovered that their male toucan is in fact a female after both of the birds laid 6 eggs creating a larger clutch of eggs than a toucan should and the "male" got his dna tested.
