After 11 years of absence the Maruyama zoo has Asian elephants again. The 1.3 elephants arrived from Myanmar after the elephant enclosure was refubished to suit Western standards. The park made research on elephant husbandry in Scandinavia. The elephants will make their debut to the public at spring

Since 2007, the zoo, which opened on Sept. 15, 1951, has been considerably modernised. In 2000, the zoo opened a modern chimpanzee house with outdoor facilities. In 2008 a facility for wolves followed and in 2010 the massively walled 525 sqm large facility for Hokkaido brown bears. 2011 followed the renewed Reptile House. The Asia Zone was built on the site of the former amusement park in 2012. The 10,000 sqm site includes facilities for Amur Tigers, Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, Himalyan Black Bears, Malay Bears and Gibbons. Finally, the Africa Zone was opened on 31 October 2015. Giraffes, zebras, hyenas, ostriches, lions and hippopotamuses now live in two large building complexes with outdoor facilities.
The zoo discovered that their male toucan is in fact a female after both of the birds laid 6 eggs creating a larger clutch of eggs than a toucan should and the "male" got his dna tested.
