So pleased to read a run of positive news about the Marwell collection in recent months - births of Hartmann's mountain zebra , giant anteater and Arabian oryx and now the arrival of a new male Siberian tiger .

Not so good news - any idea when they left? Does this mean Newquay have 2.2 or 2.2.1?

Just typical that a run of good news had to be followed by the loss of yet another species!

Why would any self-respecting zoo that prides itself - or used to , at any rate:rolleyes: - on a fine collection of ungulates WANT to go out of White-tailed Gnu (though I won't squabble with admirers of Black Wildebeest!)

On the balance of the thing I would count this as good news overall, actually - it's much better to have a decent sized group at one collection than to have two small unviable groups at two collections.

You may have a point but it has to be asked why not have that group at Marwell rather than Newquay?!

If memory serves, the wildebeest enclosure at Newquay is rather larger than that at Marwell for a start!

Of course, if the wildebeest enclosure at Marwell lies fallow with nothing to replace them, or worse is replaced with more meerkats, you may end up having a point :p

    You said it !.
The old "knowles- Marwell" is unfortunately a world away from the "newer version" that we have today.
(The Wildebeest have been one of the species on the "to go list" for some time in actual fact.)

Shame they don't appear to have a ' planned new species' list!

Whoever said they did not? I believe a little over a decade ago people were saying much the same about Chester in terms of species leaving and not much arriving, but this was just a pruning-back period required for later improvement and expansion - this may well be a similar case.

At the very least, considering that only a year or so ago people were using the declining number of Arabian Oryx as a stick to hit Marwell with, I would counsel patience.

This is news to me though as mentioned above it has been on the cards some while. Actually I can't quite understand why they bothered to get them in the first place! They only had them about four years and for the first three of those they were confined to a hardstanding.:( I guess there has been a 'policy' change involving them since their arrival- is it because of their non-endangered status perhaps, or because they are difficult and can't form a mixed exhibit maybe -or a bit of both?

But I also agree with TLD that a group in one place is better than pairs in two. If Marwell didn't want them anymore so be it, it will make Newquay's more interesting now.:)

This would not surprise me, certainly. It could always be a simple case of Marwell having taken on the species because they were available as a stopgap to fill an enclosure whilst they waited for something else to become available, of course.
