    Giraffe house changes

    from Marwells website.
We'll be making a few changes to our giraffe house over May and June to create better views and a more varied environment for both our guests and giraffe.

    What's changing?

We're expanding their outdoor area; changing the fencing, lengthening the boardwalk and creating more opportunities for you to get closer to our giraffe.

The giraffe will be moving to the valley field, next to Café Graze, whilst the builders are in action – but they’ll be back in time for summer!

This is all very good but I can't help but feel like there are other enclosures that could do with a touch up before the giraffes but hay, thats marwell i suppose!

Great to have some good news from Marwell for a change!
Anyone know when they last bred tigers? I would guess at least 7 years, maybe 10, I can't remember seeing cubs there since I became a regular visitor again about 10 years ago.

The last cubs (1.2) were born in October 2004 - they had two litters within 12 months of each other after the first cub (Zambar) was rejected and handreared

As for what became of them - The female (Nika) is at Howletts, her twin brother Ilya went to Amersfoort in the Netherlands. The second female cub (Misha) died in 2005 and Zambar (from the first litter) went to Blackpool in 2010

Mentioned on the parks Facebook about a "Giant" new arrival expected on Thursday...

Hopefully this might be a new male Giraffe at long last

No need to if the hybrid male neutered and the females vasectomised or on repro implants. Both have already been done.

    From Facebook:

It wasn't just a tall tale!
Meet 'Gulliver', our GIANT zebra sculpture, taking pride of place outside the gift shop, to coincide with the fantastic Marwell's Zany Zebras summer trails. Gulliver travelled all the way to Winchester from @Winchcombe Reclamation Ltd, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. He was created by artist DDH Creations - Dave Danson Hill and will help support the plight of the Grevy’s zebra and other at risk species.

The current pair did actually produce another litter, their first, recently but they did not survive, so technically the present cubs are their second litter.

Marwell`s Zany Zebras started to take their places around Southampton city centre yesterday, and they did look very nice, however some idiots have already vandalised two of them today! Those two have gone back to Marwell for repair.

After talking to a keeper on a recent visit, Work on the new tropical house is to start any day now. They're just waiting for the builders to become available and are aiming for a easter 2018 completion.
The new giraffe area is great too!

Where is the tropical house going?

I have to say I again, I don't think that is what's needed really! I found my visit to Marwell more depressing than ever last weekend! Too many empty enclosures, abandoned areas where enclosures once stood and not many new animals, sad!
