In the Spring addition of the Spring magazine (Marwell Zoo News Spring 2017) they have listed some of the species in the the new Tropical House: Asian Brown Tortoise (Manouria emys phayeri), Roti Island Snake Necked Turtle (Chelodina mccordi), Aquatic Caecilian (Typhlonectes natans), Roul Roul Partridge (Rollulus rouloul), Scalter's Crowned Pigeon (Goura sclaterii), Pygmy Marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea), Long-Finned Apollo Shark (Leuciscus spiloplerus) and Tiger Barbs (Puntigrus tetrazona).
So essentially all of the lemurs from the area near the snow leopards and the siamangs (I believe?)...can't believe king colobus are being switched for these guys!
The only downside to moving all the lemurs to the new area is; there's now even less animals to see at the rear of the park. I always feel once you've walked up to the tigers you don't always see very much at the back of the park. It's a shame the Colobus are leaving the park though!
There will be still be Lemurs in the old area Black White Ruffed,Red Ruffed and Gentle,just the small primates on back lawn will move down to empty areas,like Tamarin and Saki,the small primates area on back lawn are due to come down over time.
Im surprised at this move abroad with her being a Pure Rothschild but I suppose they have no bull ATM so in theory she deserves the chance to breed & they do have 4 Rothschild females left . Is there anywhere else in Britain that could accommodate the remaining 3 hybrid females ?
Apparently not according to Wild Place website they will house Kordorfan species. I`m guessing Marwell will have to keep their remaining hybrids for the foreseeable future
Nothing wrong with that I guess … in itself! Thus keeping control of and in-check the hybrid individuals on birth control, while maintaining a pure-bred group (either single sex or breeding). Marwell actually has sufficient outdoor space to even have 2 herds, right? Out of curiosity: How big a stock of giraffe can Marwell's house realistically sustain?
Yes thats what they say they want,but its not what I am hearing from my sources inside the giraffe studbook!
All female groups are not in huge supply in the UK so Wild Place would be a good place for Marwell to send hybrid females IMO (as there is only 3 left at Marwell in a mixed group which i believe is the only mixed group in the UK) Am i correct ?
This summer the zoo will play host to 80 LEGO animal sculptures, of 25 species, which will be a UK first - appearing from 1st August to 1st October. (Shame the new arrivals are not living creatures !!)
Couldn't agree more! But the Marwell of the last 10 years seems to prefer losing species rather than gaining them!
Jambari the rhinos move from Dublin was on 'The Zoo' tonight. Should be available on the international Rte player for anyone interested. Dublin keepers mentioned him hopefully breeding with new females that arrive in the future.
Some female Humboldt Penguins have moved to Flamingo Land,The last Ocelot has now left Marwell,and the Anoa are due to leave in the future,part of the valley field has now been taken for extra car parking at the rear of Marwell.
Is there any chance that this year's thread might actually contain some good news for once?! As usual most of the news concerns species leaving! A once great cat collection will be down to just 4 species soon, as the Serval were said to be on the 'to go ' list not long ago.
You are right and the whole area where Serval Ocelot are were will be redone at some time,good news if it is is that new tropical house could now have Mouse deer,and Tamandua.
