Antwerp was the owner of "Camillo" and wanted him to breed in Antwerp, in spite of the bad experiences with the bonobo keeping at the Ape House....

The Gorillas, Orang-Utans and Chimpanzees at the Ape Houses of Krefeld and Basel never went outside and breath fresh air, too...

    1. I didn't know that 'Camillo' was owned by Antwerp. What about Frankfurt's other Bonobos of the same period (Margrit, Camilla and Margrit x Camillo offspring?) Ownership?

    2. Basel Gorillas had outdoor enclosures in the old(Bird) House, then no outdoors in the existing houise until after a while they built a little outdoor cage. Not sure about Chimps/Orangs. Soon they will finally build large outdoor areas.

    1. "Eicha", "Margrit", "Camillo" and "Camilla", the first bonobos, who came to Frankfurt Zoo in 1955 and 1959, were used to be property of the RZS of Antwerp.
I think, in the meantime, Margrit is supposed to be property of the Frankfurt Zoo. The offspring is definitely owned by Frankfurt.

The ownership structure of bonobos is very complicated, for example the Milwaukee bonbos:

    Name Status

0,1 Maringa Purchase from Wassenaar (Owner: Milwaukee)
1,0 Lomako Purchase from Wassenaar (Owner: Milwaukee)
0,1 Kitty Loan from Antwerp (Owner: Antwerp)
1,0 Lody Purchase from Wassenaar (Owner: Milwaukee)
1,0 Murph Donation from Yerkes (Owner: Milwaukee)
0,1 Laura Loan from San Diego Zoo (Owner: San Diego Zoo)
0,1 Linda Loan from San Diego Zoo (Owner: San Diego Zoo)
1,0 Makanza Loan from San Diego Zoo (Owner: San Diego Zoo)
1,0 Brian Loan from San Diego Zoo (Owner: San Diego Zoo)
0,1 Zanga Mokila Birth at Milwaukee (Owner: San Diego Zoo)
0,1 Zomi II Birth at Milwaukee (Owner: Milwaukee)
1,0 Zuri Loan from Frankfurt (Owner: Frankfurt)
1,0 Viaje Loan from Zoofari (Owner: Zoofari)

Thankyou for all the information on Bonobo ownership. It certainly is very complicated.

    Regarding outdoor ape cage at Basel (apology here for diverting from main thread);

Is there only one small outdoor cage attatched to outdoor wall of Ape House? I know that I saw the Gorilla group using it once, it was many years ago though.

Does anybody have an opinion about the new outdoor bonobo exhibit? I've only seen pictures of the exhibit, and I already don't like it. It's just a trail of elevated cages. We waited 20 years for a brand new exhibit at the zoo for this ?

All right, I don't know too much about the bonobos, but I'll try my best.

    1. Kitty, the oldest female in the group, is 59 years old and is off-exhibit due to health problems.

    2. In 2010, three new bonobos joined the group: Ricky, a 16 year old male, came from Columbus, and a female, named Kitoko, was born on February 19, 2010; her mother is Zomi, and her dad is Makanza. Also, an unnamed male was born on November 19, 2010 to mom Claudine.

    3. Other bonobos that I know of are Lody, the patriarch of the group, Faith, a 6 or 7 year old female, Diedre, another female, and Viaje, Faith's father.

Of all the 17 bonobos at the zoo, this is all I know; the others I don't recall.
