Was at tonight’s alacart event and was talking with some of the zoo ambassadors about window to the wild. I found it interesting that due to budget cuts they had to cut our connecting the zebras, giraffes, and elephants into a large exhibit like it was originally planned for, however, it’s still in the plans to eventually make the connection. So maybe one day they’ll share the same space!
Still no outdoor adventures for the Colobus’ and has anyone heard what’s going on with the silverbacks? One of the males was seperated from the rest of the group, not sure which one.
Maji and Hodari the gorillas are the zoo's bachelor group because their genes are already well-represented in the population, so they will not breed. Hodari has bad anxiety and is very rarely on exhibit; the male you saw was Maji. No clue on the colobus monkey exhibit. I was expecting that to be done in time for a la carte!
I I knew Hodari had bad anxiety, but in the past they were all group together, the other day there was a group inside and just one male outside. I didn’t know if the new troop formed leaving one out or if they just decided to split them that day. (Where’s a zoo ambassador or keeper when you need one?)
I think it is interesting that this article says that MCZ is "the only zoo within a 6-hour drive to house elephants". While this is technically true, it is not the only place within a 6-hour drive where one may see elephants. Circus World Museum in Baraboo has elephants.
While this may be true, I think because they don’t follow the guidelines of elephant handling they don’t want to promote the circus museum. On a different note ish, just got an update from the zoological society. It looks like they are hoping to get a male bongo to start breeding program. Also it looks like they are wanting to add a couple bird species to the new exhibits. No word yet on what those species will be, (here’s to hoping they have an ostrich as one of the bird species). Also, they didn’t say if they are bringing in any new mamal species like they were talking about at the start of this years zoological society annual campaign.
Stopped by the zoo today, they are making progress on the elephant exhibit with the shelters and shaded areas being installed. Also, it looks like they are starting to put finishing touches on the Impala yard as well. Maybe they will hit their October deadline of moving the animals over into their new homes before old man winter returns. I realized I haven't posted any update photos lately of the construction. Hope you enjoy them. Adventure Africa Construction
Such sad news. The silver lining, though, is that two young females, Savannah and Amali, remain at the zoo. I'm thinking they will breed them with Themba in the future.
That has been the overall plan. I’ve heard over many months that they were waiting for Sanura to pass in order for them to start breeding again. The flip side of this is I believe we are still at max capacity in the car building due to the Tigers. Although we’ve had several cats pass away this year, we may have room again to start breeding.

It appears that the zoo is projecting to have a deficit of some $240k due to the poor weather this past spring, as they are claiming. They have stopped all non essential maintenance and will be doing everything they can to keep that number from growing this year.
Great news though, the zoo announced the first-ever birth of a red panda in Milwaukee! THe cub is a female born on June 6, and will be named at a future date. Red Panda Cub Born at the Milwaukee County Zoo Debut Coming Soon! | Milwaukee County Zoo
