Oh I never doubted that the otters wouldn't be on exhibit year round, as the article specifically states that one of the reasons they were picked because they could be outside year round.
Per the zoo facebook page: With very heavy hearts we announce the death of Naku, 17-year-old western lowland gorilla. On Friday, zookeepers noticed Naku was appearing more tired than normal and after 24 hours of non-stop observation and supportive care her condition warranted an exam, which resulted in the need for emergency surgery. Surgery showed a necrotic bowel and because of the prognosis, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her on Saturday. We extend our appreciation to the network of professionals from around the country that assisted our veterinary experts, including veterinarians and pediatric physicians that worked tirelessly with our staff in the hope of bringing Naku through this difficult series of events. The priority for our dedicated animal care team continues to be the well-being of the family group, including caring for Naku’s baby, Zahra.
Devastating news about Naku. Bad enough to loose the silverback with an infant in the group but to loose the infants mother and only other adult must be devastating for Shalia, Sulaiman and Zahara. I'm particularly worried about Shalia and her son because I watched her grow up in Toronto.
Wow, Milwaukee’s gorilla troop has really had a rough go lately! First Cassius the silverback, and now Naku the new mother. R.I.P. Naku, and wishing the best for little Zahra.
And in less than 1 month, Zahra became an orphan. I hope Cassius's and Naku's death weren't related, and it's something that could potentially wipe out the whole troop! Best wishes to all the staff and gorillas!
The perspectives for the orphaned baby are also not the best. I do hope they can reintegrate the baby with the family group at some point, but ... I doubt it. Also, with the group without a silverback social tensions might arise ...

I am taking a trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo this summer, being the first time I have been there in a long time. (The last time being before I could really remember anything, as I was so young.) What should I be looking forward to when I arrive? Any new exhibits opening this summer?
In a couple weeks a new second entrance complex will open, complete with brand-new concessions, amenities, and even a river otter habitat. Also, as mentioned above, a new “Bear Garden” should be in business soon, along with a summer dinosaur exhibit. Finally, we also have many recent additions: an 8-month-old giraffe calf (and another on the way), two chevrotains, an agouti (brand-new for Milwaukee), a serval, red river hogs (2014), a yellow-backed duiker, and more. Unfortunately, the Adventure Africa elephant complex opens next year, but construction should be coming along during your visit - maybe even close to completion(?). Enjoy your visit to my home zoo!
