A few important details from the article.

-Kenyan crested gunieafowl will be part of the African Forest yard with the bongos and duiker.
-The Conservation Outpost will be dedicated to educating visitors about elephants in the wild.
-It seems the part of the yard that actually is heated is the side yard that the elephants have had access to for the past couple of months. The main yard is not heated.
-The new hippo and rhino habitats will be open between 2020-2023.

We're exactly one month away from the grand opening of the new exhibit. Unfortunately, I will be out of town that day so I will not be there on opening day, which is frustrating. Luckily, I will be at the zoo the day after and will be uploading dozens of photos of everything this new area has to offer including exhibits, animals and overviews. I will also be preparing a video dedicated to this area to release shortly after, and I will be posting it here. The wait is almost over!

Rayma officially left us today. She is now a resident of Phoenix zoo.

Haven’t heard anything, also haven’t seen anything going on at the exhibit. It may stay vacant until after phase 1 opens.

If it isn't removed I'm suspecting it to become a Klipspringer exhibit

That's my guess to, but no way to confirm this.

I believe that it will remain in place for now. I suspect that it will be turned into a new exhibit for a smaller African species down the road, meerkats would make sense. I will say, it will be very strange to be walking through a set of exhibits that just opened and then seeing this relic from decades ago just sitting empty.

No planning dates for Phase II hippos and rhinos? Or when construction might start?

Hippo construction is set to begin not long after phase 1 is open, so that should start in the summer.

I'm guessing (and hoping) that the exhibit is blocked by a fence, or display, or something to cover it or at least distract from it. Very exciting times!

Currently it is not. It would be cool to have them do what Disney does and put up fun walls for people to take selfies/photos with, but I don’t think that will happen.

It'll very interesting to go visit when these new exhibits are out. But, then Rayma leaving their current male, doesn't that make him the only orangutan left at the zoo? I cannot remember if he is a hybrid or not.

I kind of hope they bring in a new female for Tommy. I saw him the other day and he just sat. He needs someone to keep him up and active imo.

Good news the zoo acknowledged on Twitter, that we will be getting a companion for Tommy sometime in the near future.

Looks like Dr.Lilly the red panda has a new home at the Nashville Zoo. It was announced today on Nashville’s Instagram feed.
