Does anyone know the history of Monarto Zoo’s Lions. They currently have 5.3.4 African Lions: Inkosi (M) B 00/00/2007 Levi/Leroy x Tiombe Jelani (M) B 24/04/2013 Leroy x Tiombe Nia (F) B 24/04/2013 Leroy x Tiombe Husani (F) B 24/04/2013 Leroy x Tiombe Makena (F) B 18/06/2013 Leroy x Kiamba Kubwa (M) B 20/10/2015 Johari x Nilo Kito (M) B 20/10/2015 Johari x Nilo Kashka (M) B 20/10/2015 Johari x Nilo Unamed (M) B 17/02/2020 Kubwa/Kashka/Kito x Husani Unamed (F) B 17/02/2020 Kubwa/Kashka/Kito x Husani Unamed (F) B 17/02/2020 Kubwa/Kashka/Kito x Husani Unamed (F) B 17/02/2020 Kubwa/Kashka/Kito x Husani I also thought they had females, Tiombe (2004), Zalika (2004), and Kiamba (2004), but Monarto’s website only states they have the Lions listed above.
The founders were: 1.0 Levi (born November 1999 at Mogo Zoo) 1.0 Leroy (born November 1999 at Mogo Zoo) 0.1 Kiamba (born January 2004 at Adelaide Zoo) Maalo x Amali 0.1 Zalika (born March 2004 at Auckland Zoo) Lazarus x Amira 0.1 Tiombe (born April 2004 at Auckland Zoo) Lazarus x Kura 0.1 Kibira (born April 2004 at Auckland Zoo) Lazarus x Kura Levi sired the two litters in 2007: 2.0 to Tiombe and 0.0.4 to Kiamba. Leroy sired the litter born 2011: 0.1 to Kiamba; and the two litters born 2013: 1.2 to Tiombe and 1.1 to Kiamba. These three lionesses were sent to Dubbo in 2019. Being post reproductive, they were unable to integrate them with the new males. It’s a shame, as it would have been cool to see a multigenerational pride.
No worries. His name was Zinzi and he was sadly euthanised at two years of age in late 2009. He had ongoing health issues related to his leg. Monarto recovered well from a rocky start - which included the stillbirth of Kiamba’s first litter in 2007 (which required a cesarean to remove the cubs); and the deaths of Levi and Zinzi in 2009.
