The last fishing cat in Hellabrunn has been transferred to La Torbiera Zoo last week. It seems that there is no future for this beautiful species in Munich, a sad loss for a collection that is more and more focused on ABC species.
They will come back, but the jungle tent where they now live will be renovated soon. Palawan porcupine will be one of the new inhabitants there too. I had the impression Munich was increasing its commitment to slightly smaller species, as some native ectotherms were added in the childrens zoo and the freeflight aviary got new inhabitants too.
No, they won't come back anytime soon. It will depend on several factors, including the future of the European population...and nothing is sure at the moment. It's a pity that Munich has lost so many cat species over the past years.
Interesting, they are part of the official plans for after the renovation that were published on the website of the chosen architect.
Official plans are based on theory (eg: the Temminck's cat at the ABH in Berlin...) and the websites of architects are not always reliable (many examples of it...), but sometimes reality is different and the situation with the fishing cat is unpredictable, the population is too small at the moment. We'll see, but it will take time...
