I've visited 35 different zoos, wildlife parks and aquariums. That includes around 15 in Australia, as my wife and I spent our honeymoon travelling all over that vast continent for 6 weeks earlier this year. I've been to the zoo and wildlife park in Zurich, Switzerland...and the other 18 have been throughout western Canada and the western half of the United States. That used to seem like an awful lot to me, but then I realized that there are people on this website who have doubled that total!!

The San Diego Zoo, Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo, Taronga Zoo, Melbourne Zoo, San Diego Seaworld, Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Calgary Zoo all have some excellent exhibits and rate quite highly. With massive development seemingly at all of the top zoos it becomes difficult to rank my 35 from best to worst.

Seattle has won 5 or 6 AZA exhibit awards, San Diego is currently building "Elephant Odyssey" for over $40 million, Taronga is spending a whopping amount of cash on "Great Southern Oceans", the Vancouver Aquarium is already quite good and will almost double in size by late 2009, and the Calgary Zoo is spending an enormous $135 million on a football field-sized polar bear, penguin, arctic/antarctic complex. And with even a relatively small but decent zoo like Adelaide willing to put up $20 million in expansion costs ( new entrance, cafe, giant panda exhibit, etc ) then the best zoos are constantly changing to fit the times. How to choose the best????

Snowleopard - you must have a very understanding wife if you managed 15 zoos in 6 weeks on your honeymoon! My family know me well enough to ask whenever I have booked a holiday which zoos are going to be involved, but I'm afraid more than two per week wouldn't be tolerated! They are all pretty enthusiastic though, even if they are not "enthusiasts", they can all name all the species of rhino, can identify creatures such as aye-ayes and bilbies, and my youngest son favourite animal is the okapi.

Pygathrix, My brother is just the same. He'll complain continuously, but when he gets there he'll be excitedabout seeing the baby tapirs or Manatees. He can name lots of species, like all four tapirs and he knows more about manatees than me!!
My Mum will be happy to go along to most zoos because she likes orangs and plants. Chester is perfect from her point of view!
My Dad likes animals, but loves photography, so will always take his camera along and thats where I get most of my pictures from.

I went to both about 16 years ago, pre-pandas, and the californian condors were not then on show :(

I suppose that I had always imagined the zoo was the best in the world so it was a bit of an anti-climax. Overall I think I enjoyed the zoo more as it had such a concentration of rare and unusual animals. At that time the zoo had lots of "mesas" and "grottos" which aren't the most attractive way of exhibiting, but I get the impression that it's a lot more immersion than that now. The WAP is huge, but was much better than UK safari parks. The fantastic climate really gives you the impression that you are looking at an actual savannah (not that I have ever seen the real thing:(:()
