Now I would get REALLY excited about Saola in particular,- but sadly 99.999% of Chester's mainstream visitors wouldn't, so I think its more likely Pigs will fly (or Red River Hogs take wing?) than either of these species ever come to Chester. But I can always hope I am wrong.;)

Cat-man, don't just post a list of random species that don't fit the mentioned criteria.

Pertinax, Sun Wukong et al are discussing species in depth which fit the profile (realistic or not)

I doubt Chester would bother with mountain tapir as they already have tapir in the collection (although they would fit the cloud forest theme better).

I don't believe that there are any sumatran rhino outside of indonesia other then those at cincinatti and the individual at white oak.

I know this cat-man, I was referring to a post by another member who had guessed at a species and was asking the question "was they on about the Mystery Ungulate" not that the DIK-DIK's were, okay I see that it wasn't completely clear.

If there is one thing this thread proves, its that everyone(well Zoochat folk anyway) loves a mystery. Every so often we come back to trying to guess what this species is, even if it never actually materialises....

almost 9 years since the last post on this thread, I'll try and see if I can find out if the import is still on, although if it is I bet I'll be asked not to mention the species.

9 years is a long time and many ungulates have joined the collection since, it could have been any one of those.

Except it couldn't because the thread is quite specific that it is an ungulate that wasn't in any public European collection 9 years ago. That presumably narrows it down to zero.
Furthermore I think there's more chance of Rob actually knowing how many bongos Chester has than of him not knowing what this 'mystery' species is.

I believe the animal was Phillip's dik-dik, that could have been imported from Al-Wabra, but as can now be seen 9 years on, fell through.
And if i was still a mod, here is where i would close this thread.

Only collection in the UK - there were about six other holders in Europe last time I checked Zootierliste.

I've never seen an elephant in Crewe, but I did see one (Asiatic) in Nantwich a few years ago. In a field, as we drove past.

And a few miles away in Batherton I saw a Red Panda.
