It originates from 2 separate sources: The French word magot describing / transliterating the Hebrew wording Magog - used in the Middle Ages as a derogatory slang word for non Christianic peoples. However, after the end of the 16th Century it was subsequently used to define the Barbary macaque of northern African Rif mountain range.

Till this day the notion is current in French and the Germanic languages (including Dutch). So, any Anglo-Saxons might think of maggots ..., but ye all think again!!! (As a luxury now you learn something everyday).

BTW: the pudu will remain at Halle Zoo, just getting a different exclosure.

The only ones in continental Europe surely? Hamerton and Tayto Park should still hold them unless I've missed something?

I'm sure there's some in private hands as well. :)

Still incorrect; unless things have changed very recently there is a pair at Tierpark Berlin in Germany, and another pair at Starooskolskiy Zoopark in Russia!

Sofar, this year 7 Florida brown pelicans have been hatched at Halle :).
This subspecies was obtained in 2003 and in 2008 Halle had the European first-breeding with it.

New species for Halle ( and as it seems Europe ) : Philippine banded monitor - Varanus nuchalis :

2019 seems to become again a good pelican-year for Halle. At the moment at least 3 chicks are seen at the nests and being parent-raised :).

Now I have heard that the calf is separated from its mother because she has attacked it. I hope it turns out well.

    News from Halle:
Tana started taking care of the calf and is now developing well.

Pori should come from Tierpark Berlin. He meets his daughter Tana and her grandchildren. Panya and Ayo are supposed to move to an unknown location (some debates about the Tierpark Berlin that they would like to receive after the reconstruction of the elephant house).
