When we last visited the zoo ( April 2008 ), the crocodile area of the reptile house was sealed off, as a new exhibit for the Morelet's Crocodiles was being built. Does anybody know if this exhibit is now open? What will the zoo do with the Mexico House that the crocs were in before ?

Does anyone on here have any photos of the recent Orang enclosure or a "review" of the new enclosure.

Having read the short page on Vienna's website, it seems to be a very intriguing renovation of an old building...

Interesting, I really like the outside.

Interesting us of arched windows, but this does mean lots of natural light for them.

The elephants Numbi and her son Kibo from Zoo Wuppertal arrived at Zoo Vienna this week. They are doing fine, I'm sure they will like our Zoo, although they have to get used to protected contact (at Zoo Vienna) instead of free contact (Zoo Wuppertal). :D

    When they arrived:

Two days later they discovered the larger part of the outdoor enclosure while the Viennese elephants Tonga, her 6-year-old daughter Mongu and Drumbo stayed indoor:

The cutie is called "E.T." by its keepers, although that is not its official name. It's great fun watching that little baby gibbon :D

Sad news from Vienna: female syrian brown bear Kara, born in Dec 1969, at Zoo Vienna since June 3, 1970 (!), had to be euthanized this Monday. Aged more than 40 years, Kara was one of the oldest bears in a zoo.

A baby giraffe was born to Rita on July 4, 2011. It's her first calf, gender still unknown. It was named Arusha. The cute little one is doing very well. :)

    Red Pandas got new home

Because of the construction work on the old/new polarbear enclosure the red pandas (1,1) were moved to their new enclosure. The old enclosure was on the backside of the polarbears' home. So the cute red pandas got a really great new home at the end of the outdoor area of the giant pandas.

Find some pics and a video of their new home on zoobesuche.net.

I've been doing a little research and Igor the male Amur tiger at Colchester Zoo was born here. Does anybody know who his parents and does he have any litter mates or siblings?

AFAIK, Igor was a single child. His father was Ivan (Iwan), born at Leipzig on June 11, 1993, came to Vienna in 1994. He died on July 12, 2010. After the death of Tanja, Igor's mother, born at Berlin on May 13, 1998, came to Vienna in 1994, died Dec 31, 2008, Ivan was a great single dad to Igor's youngest twin sisters Ina & Kyra, born June 24, 2008. Ina & Kyra are still at Zoo Vienna.

    Igor's other siblings are:

    Twins Amber (1,0) & Lena (0,1), born April 10, 2006, at Bussolengo since March 12, 2008

Twin girls Lara & Nadja, born in May 2000, at Zoo Schmiding since Nov 2004

Mischa (1,0), born May 1997, at Banham Zoo since May 1999

Any indication that one of the girls will eventually get a new breeding partner?

On other issues: any more zoos on line for the illegal Caribbean parrot confiscation?
