Good news for a species down to around 600 animals, a new colony of Mediterranean monk seal has been discovered in undisclosed location, somewhere in Greece. BBC - Earth News - Rare monk seal colony found in the Mediterranean
Thanks for posting this great news, it doesn't sound like a huge colony, but it's a big boost to the species nonetheless. It's pleasing that they've retained the normal behaviour of using open beaches, but I'm surprised that they hadn't been spotted earlier if there are many people on the island. I've long been impressed by MOm's work, particularly in rehabilitating these seals, so it's good to know that this new population is under competent watch.
This is great news indeed. Btw, for all interested in Mediterranean monk seals, there is a wealth of information on the Monachus Guardian website: The Monk Seal on the Web I especially recommend their newsletters: Monk Seal Library
