Now official - they came from Colchester and Belfast. Eventually it is planned to mix them with the Woolly Monkey's
Next year Jambo, the silverback leader gorilla at Apenheul leave and being replaced by the male Bao Bao which will come from Taipei Zoo Taiwan : Cookies op AD.nl | AD.nl
Oh? Why's that? I was there this summer and they did like during the feeding that he was gonna be here for a while.
Plus there have always been some problems with him as a group leader I gather. Some of his sons will move with him to form a bachelor group, possibly in the Middle East.
You would have to wonder what is the biology and ecology of wild gorillas. Nothing out of the ordinary that a new silverback takes over.
The main problem is that Jambo is well represented, being part of the overly represented Boma x Massa line. He has had 8 successful offspring in the group, so it’s time for a change. There were some problems with him as leader, but not anymore. They will be going to Al Ain.
Yes they transferred one of the sisters who were creating a power unit against him, didn't they. I guess after that he was able to dominate them better. I hope the new unrepresented male BaoBao turns out to be a breeder for them, given he has spent many(?) years previously living alone in Tawain.
The Taiwan male is named Pau Pau not Bao Bao as I said above(he was the Berlin Panda but they sound similar). I saw a recent video of him and he looks in good condition but the long time he's been alone is a bit of a concern for his prospects after he moves. Hope it goes well though.
The male Gorilla Pau Pau from Taiwan is scheduled to arrive at Apenheul in the next month or so- but no news of a date for a move yet for the current Apenheul male Jambo and his sons.
Gorilla Bao Bao has arrived on 15.3.2018 in Apenheul from Taipeh, Taiwan. First introductions have taken place with gorilla female Mintha. He will be gradually introduced to other family group members. Link: Nieuwe gorillaleider Bao Bao
Bao Bao is wildborn and therefore one of only 40 wildborn animals and 8 wildborn males in Europe (being born in approx. 1985 he’s on the younger side compared to most of the other wildborns).
