Maria Island is the island refuge where it was planned to put Thylacines if any could be found for a last ditch attempt at breeding. Its good that its been able to help the Devils at least.

After doing some Googling it appears that he (and his wife) operate the Maria Island Ferry and Eco Cruises company.

he sounds like a right knob. His "eco cruises" must be entertaining.

yeah I'd scrolled through it a couple of times to see if it said who he was, and completely failed to see that. After Jabiru96 said he was the ferry operator, then I saw that it actually said it in the article.

They should release devils in some dingo-free area in mainland Australia, where devils lived until recently. They would be native predator regulating the numbers of foxes and cats, and if something goes wrong would not be difficult to catch back!

Would they eat the foxes and cats? They could just as likely become another predator of the mainland prey species already threatened by hunting from invasives.

By the way, does anyone know if the new devils in the US are the foundation of a breeding program or are they for display purposes only?

I believe the latter is the case, and that all the individuals sent to the USA are either post-reproductive or surplus to the breeding programme.

@TeaLovingDave : I've seen articles saying that they were surplus to the breeding program, but I'm not sure whether or not that alone excludes the animals from reproducing. To me, that statement just means that they are over-represented in Australia, not that they aren't allowed to breed in the US. However, I suspect you might be right given that I haven't heard any zoo talk about potentially breeding their new devils.
