A new year and a new species for the Nertherlands. Mid-januari a male Siberian rubythroat ( Calliope ( Luscinia ) calliope ) was discovered in a garden in Hoogwoud.
The owner discovered there was a lot of intrest in this bird and let the bird-watchers view the rubythroat from his living-room. They had to pay however a small donation ;) ! Around 350 bird-watchers visited the living-room and also several broadcasting-teams came to see the bird.

Actually not true vogelcommando, Golden Jackals have been showing up in places as far north as Estonia. Their range has been expanding and is extending into Austria at the moment. At the same time strays have been recorded in the Baltics and Poland. So the expectation is that it is a wild animal.

2016 seems to be a very good year for new species because again a new species has been found in the Netherlands. Near the German border a male Moustached warbler ( Acrocephalus melanopogon ) has been catched by a ringing-station and released shortly after. Its now in a protected, none-public area but it can be heared singing very well from out-side the protected area.

Not a complete new species because on its migration to and from Africa the Osprey is a quite common bird in the Netherlands but as a breeding-bird it was still missing. During the last few years some attemps to breed were made but without succes.
This year 2 pairs started to made nests at the Biesbosch and the first egg has been laid so lets hope everything went well and a new breeding-bird species can be added to the Dutch list !

For a while a "wild", unbanded and unchipped African yellowbill has been seen in the wild near Enschede and Hengelo but after it started to freeze the bird could be caught next to a goldfish-pond. It was brought to "Animal-rescue" - Enschede were it was discovered it had no ring and no chip. Evenso it's most probably an escaped bird.
The Dutch ( and German ) name for this species is Nimmerzat ( German : Nimmersatt ) meaning "never saturated" and the bird at Enschede is honoring its name : large amounts of chickens, mice and mackerels are fed daily and therefor the "Animal-rescue" hopes the bird can be placed soon in a zoo or birdpark.
