    Nope, it's slated for 2018.

Are they planning on reopening/opening everything at the same time?

Also, does the aquarium have sea turtles? I saw Loggerhead and Hawksbill labeled but saw neither.

No idea on either count, I'm afraid. I've just been keeping an eye on the opening date as it might figure into some future travel plans.

For right now only The Ocean Wonders Building will open in 2018. They have only begun preliminary work on "Spineless Wonders" and the "Aqua Children's Zoo". I don't know if any work has started below Sea Cliffs; however I am also happy that they have a master plan that does look like will really enhance the aquarium.

As for Tazo- I have only seen him on exhibit once in the side sea otter pool in February. I have never seen him out in the summer. And this summer I did not see the sea turtles, but they are still in the collection in one of the large pools behind the Aquatheatre.

About the sea turtles: I don't know if everyone else ran into this article about the dangers of aquarium sea turtles, but if not, maybe some of the issues mentioned within factor into the decision the keep the turtles out of the shark's temporary tank. Also, the article mentions that New York Aquarium is trying to train the turtles, so maybe they need them in special tanks while they condition them.

As a field correspondent, the turtles are residing in their own tank (I think) while they wait for the exhibit to open in 2017

I thought the exhibit didn't open until 2018?

There have been some rotations at the Sea Cliffs exhibit. The walrus are gone, with signage removed and the overhead netting being removed. The California Sea Lions have moved into that exhibit. The old sea lion exhibit is now home to a large flock of brown pelicans (I saw at least 8). Not the most exciting species.

The Sharks exhibit's outside looks almost done and hopefully there will be no delays with its opening next summer. The next exhibit (once money allows) will either be the "Amazing Invertebrates" or the "Aqua Zone" kids area. The Sea Cliffs underwater viewing area will eventually be fully renovated and reopen, but I don't know how long that will take.

Does the aquarium no longer hold walrus?

Ocean Wonders Shark is opening June 30th. On the website I think there is a mistake stating the large ocean tank is 62,000 gallons instead of 620,000 gallons.

No, at this time Ocean Wonders and a new café will open. There will also be a boardwalk restaurant. The next three exhibits (World of Invertebrates, Sea Cliffs Lower Level and AquaZone Children's Area) will go under construction at a later date.

They haven't started it yet? I thought it's been under construction since Hurricane Sandy as it's a rebuild of existing areas.

Not currently, not sure if it is planned to bring them back or not. There is a pretty limited population of walrus in collections in the US.

What happened to their Walrus? They had two in 2016.

Kulu was sent to Point Defiance on breeding loan.
Mitik was sent to SeaWorld Texas, but isn’t now at SeaWorld California I believe.

Mitik has been gone for many years now I believe and yes he's in San Diego now. I thought they had two females or did one die? As much as I'm saddened to hear the aquarium has lost one of its two star species (and one which afaik isn't kept anywhere else in the northeast US) I never liked them in that enclosure as it seemed very small.

What do you consider the star species besides walrus? Sea otters?

Yeah Sea Otters. I'd imagine to Joe Public Sea Otters and Walruses would be the largest draws, though the new shark building should interest people now.

They still list walrus on their website as a species they have. That's so frustrating, I was planning on making a visit this summer to see that and the sea lions and seals.
