After looking at the website it appears they want Leopards & Jaguars?, I would love to see these species back in Australian zoos but was under the impression they were to be phased out in collections in this country?
just looked at the website and it reminded me a lot of alma park zoo's website. I thought that the logo looked good but like many of us thought the the name was a bit of a flop. something I would like to see is a species wish list. I can only just gague what they want by looking at some of the photos. other than that I thought that the website was good but not flawless. as for how they will go I don't know. time will tell.
Hang on while I put on my bullet-proof vest! Yeah, point taken, people. I WAS being a bit provocative and prejudiced. Just for the record, I am certainly not a purist; nor am I anti-white tigers (or lions, for that matter). If I was that would make me a hypocrite, because I have bred plenty of mutation parrots over the years. Also, in the company of my grandsons, I greatly enjoyed Dreamworld's tiger display earlier this year. As for Dreamworld's financial contribution to tiger conservation, that's great. But it's still an amusement park with tigers - not a zoo. South-east Queensland lacks a large, scientifically based mainstream zoo. This proposed cat park sounds very ambitious - hope they've got plenty of money!
We are unsure of what Dreamworld's plans are regarding it's animal collection and I'm sure the manager of the collection is just as dedicated to his job as any other zoo boss or life sciences manager in the country. This cat park though is very ambitious sounding, I just hope it works well, I'd visit. I just hope it doesn't turn in to an Australian Zion.
@Ara, For whats it worth mate I understood what you were trying to say even if it sounded a little off the mark, I agree they do sound very ambitious also it will be interesting to see if they can get the leopards & Jaguars they seem to want.
That's because you are Ara! We wouldn't have you any other way. You would be surprised [I am] at the people who pm me or email me agreeing with many of your posts but who won't put their heads up when the proverbial hits the fan! Keep telling it like you see it.
Funny you should say that. A former senior manager tried to tell us the Dreamworld was exempt from zoo Standards because it was a theme park - not a zoo!
If this new zoo does go ahead maybe south east Queensland could be knee deep in Tigers in a few years time, not a bad thing as far as I am concerned as I love Big cats
G'day JT - would you care to elaborate? Who are "We"? And what is there to be "unsure" about Dreamworld's collection plans? They seem to be pretty clearly defined in the 2010 ASMP Census and Plan. Do you know something that the rest of us don't?????
We as in the forum in general. Dreamworld makes very valuable contributions o the industry here. They are involved in the Tasmanian devil program and make other significant contributions to wildlife education and conservation. Including wildlife outreach programs.
I'm just saying that dreamworld's contribution is on par with our major zoos just because it's animal operations are attached to a theme park does not make them less valid as some have been suggesting.
I saw the report on the channel 9 news tonight which stated the zoo would be 80 Hectares in size and cost $50 million, It sounded like they were still looking for the land
I too, like many others, am curious about the experience base regarding this venture.I have always found those that have to blow trumpet usually are not that clever and after seeing first hand the state of some sanctuaries in the the US,I would hate to see QLD follow that example. We will all have to wait with baited breath.
