    Hello everyone !

Have you got any news, births or informations on projects about the Osnabrück Zoo (Germany) ?

For example, do you know which species will occupy the former chimpanzee enclosure after their departure to "Takamanda", the new african zone in work ?
And how long does it take to visit this park ?
What is your opinion about the Zoo ?

    Thank you,

    Maxime.

    All change with Osnabruck elephants...

Next week - African cows, Matidi and Sabi will be relocated to Toulouse

This will then leave Osnabruck with Bull, Tutame. The article states that plans are being made for him to travel to a collection in Canada, however I don't recall any collections in Canada housing elephants now (with the exception of Toronto who's individuals are on there way out) ?

Should the Canadian transfer fall through however, as back up plan has been agreed in the form of Fasano, Italy

If all goes to plan, then by the end of March Osnabruck will have welcomed a family group of four Asian elephants from Emmen

Zoo de Granby near Montreal has an excellent multi acre (I believe three?) elephant exhibit which now only houses one female. I would imagine Granby made the deal!

Hemmingford park safari is the other facility in Canada with African elephants and has 1.1 animals. I would prefer Tutame went to Granby. But time will tell.

The European Black Vulture-female bred last year at Osnabrueck has been send to Antwerp Zoo to be paired-up with one of the birds already being kept there ( at least 2 male are there ).
The Black Vulture had already bred at least once before and that young has been released in a South-european re-introduction project.

The South American Tropical Hall has been changed into the Mendoza Hall. Instead of large trees and dence vegatation now a dry Argentinian Highland-landscape has been created in the Hall. The energy-costs for the Tropical hall became to high and now a colder climate which needs much less heathing has been realized.
In the Hall visitors walk between rocks, fallen trees and dry-climate bushes and plants and can try to discover the animal-species living in the hall. Among them monk parakeets, wild cavys, tanagers, californian quails ( strange choise for an Argentinian display :) ) and bare-faced curassows.
The re-designed hall will be open to the public within a few days.

Osnabrueck anounced the birth of a rarely kept rodent-species. Belonging to the family Octodontidae ( with as best-known species the Degu ) the Coruro ( Spalacopus cyanus ) is only rarely kept in public collections. At Osnabrueck end February 3 young were born.

I like that. Zoo rainforest halls are a dime a dozen, but rarely do zoos try something different. How big is this house?

I visited in June 2012 and thought the tropical house to be very dull and run-down. Great to hear that they are trying something new and interesting!

Arrival of asian elephant cows has been delayed due to possible health problems. The bull will arrive as scheduled.
