Khao Kheow Open Zoo has been discussed previously here and it is a welcome departure from the regular S.E. Asian zoos.

They have a number of achievements including a nice hoofstock, felid and primate collection and some interesting conservation breeding projects (clouded leopards, brow-antlered deer and douc langur ...) It is essentially an open range style zoo and includes a large African savannah.

To set the thread off. Some news on their white rhinos.

    QUOTE:
"Tons of bachelor fun arrive at Khao Kheow

    by Ariyawat Nuamsawat

There was no need for these two swinging bachelors to check their brains at the airport. Weighing in at four and three tons apiece, brains aren’t the reason these two were brought here. They have a much nobler cause: propagation of a species.

One of the two now rhinos arrives at Khao Kheow Zoo.

Ingozi and Sudi, two lucky male white rhinoceroses from Singapore Zoo, arrived at Khao Kheow Zoo last week to take part in a rather primal mating game. Perhaps not so discreetly or daintily waiting for them were two white rhino ladies already living at Khao Kheow Zoo.

Khao Kheow Zoo director, Suriya Saengpong, supervised the arrival of the hunky bachelors, Ingozi, 6, and Sudi, 4. They are here according to a multi-national animal exchange program to preserve endangered wild animals.

“We are happy to welcome the two new rhinos to our zoo and to have them mate with our current female white rhinos to prevent this species from extinction,” Suriya said.

Zoo officials hope the two couples will hit it off and someday soon there will be little Ingozis and Sudis running around underfoot. Are those wedding bells we hear?"

Encouraging read that Singapore Zoo is transferring some captive-born white rhinos to hook up with 2 lonely hearts .. :D. Being socially adept and given the excellent conditions in the zoo (Heart of Africa is quite a recent new exhibit) - I look forward to some pitter patter in 1-2 years.

Not the only example for hippos or pygmy hippos in S.E. Asia. Hence, kept us wondering how it is not possible to create decent breeding groups in ZAA region.

Is Mae Malee the hippo still alive? I haven't heard the zoo mentioning her since September 2020.

I think she still alive because
Mae Mali is superstar in Thailand , The newspaper/TV will be published every year when it comes to her birthday. So newspaper/TV will post if she dies. but I didn't see that news.

This is the news for her 56th birthday. 8 Sep 2021

P.S. : Mae = mother , Mali = Jasmine (in Thai culture Sometimes we use the prefix "Mae" with older women.)
