Some good news to start off a new thread. The zoo has just received a male white rhino named Kifaru from Africa Alive in the UK. He's around ten years old and was born at Marwell (UK) Hopefully he will breed in the near future
Very rare birth at Zoo Augsburg : a Northern Slow Lory ( Nyciticebus bengalensis ) born. The mother was being conficugated for 10 years at an airport and it's her first young. Because of lacking morher-care the young is being hand-raised.
The Slow lory is developing fine and some other births of the last month : 2 Harbour seals several Rocky Mountain goats several coatis
Some bird-news from Augsburg : White-crowned robin chat Cossypha albicapillus breeding well at the moment White-eared bulbul Pycnonotus leucotis breeding well at the moment Goldeneye Bucephala clangula after a break of several year, bred this year again
A male giraffe has been born at Augsburg Zoo but the mother didn't accept it and is now hand-raised. Attemps are however made to re-unit mother and son.
White rhino swapping, as "Kifarou" is not able to mate he was transferred to Duisburg on 9 April 2014 and replaced by "Bantu" (born at Whispnade in 2005) from Kerkrade on 29 April 2004.
At the beginning of Februari a female Fiji banded iguana hatched at Augsburg. She is the first young bred at Augsburg.
A marten has killed some of the birds in the new walk-though-aviary shortly before the offiical opening. So they moved the surving birds into the indoorr exhibit to fix the fence. Strange, three years ago the same happend at Hagenebck, a marten has killed there in several days al puffins except one....it seems, it is very difficult to build a martensafe aviary....
Some intresting bird-hatchlings took place this year. Examples are : 1 Roseate spoonbill 1 White spoonbill 3 Little egrets 1 Trumpeter hornbill 4 Cape shelducks 1 Grosbeak starling
1.0 White Rhino born 6th Feb to female, Kibibi. A first breeding at Augsburg. Unfortunately the calf failed to start feeding and is having to be handreared.. A second calf is also expected to be born in a matter of weeks
Tomorow new Beaver and Otter enclosures will be opened to the public. The Beaver enclosure measures 500 m2 and the Otter enclosure 300 m2. In the indoor part of these enclosures also 3 large aquariums can be found.
