Disney's male very likely came from Denver as he was the recommended breeding male for the females. There are roughly 32 lion tailed macaques in the AZA. The majority are post reproductive and zoos are phasing them out in a significant way. The SSP is recommending imports from Europe and India (who is very eager to participate in the global breeding program) but even with imports the population will likely stay small due to a lack of interest. Toronto did have a breeding troop. They are on phase out. There are currently 4 at the zoo. A post reproductive inbred female, her two youngest offspring, and an unrelated older female who has never bred. An additional male and female related to the oldest female live at Safari Niagara in their small troop. I'm not aware if that troop is breeding because the Toronto owned male is sterilized. He and his sister are super inbred. I believe no other Canadian zoos hold them. The current placement of AZA animals is exactly as Kudu said it is. The Jackson male is slated to go to El Paso for companionship. Woodland Park is also exploring European imports.
A female African bush elephant calf was born on December 14th; she has been named "Stella": Wildlife Wednesday: Elephant Calf Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
YEEEESSSS!!! Much needed good news for the African elephant breeding program. I'm visiting next Friday since I will be doing the Kiliminjaro walking safari (a Christmas present) and visiting the park.
Visited today to do the Wild Africa Trek (a Christmas gift) before I head back up north for the start of the semester. I added tons of pictures to the gallery, have plenty of notes and answers to questions to share and will be posting a detailed review of the park very soon.
Hello from Germany, could anybody help me to identify the elephants at Disney.. Please have a look to my website of elephants: Petra Prager – Elefanten-Fotolexikon thank you and greetings from germany Petra
Sumatran Tiger Cubs have been born, it will be fun to have cubs in the Jungle Trek! Wildlife Wednesday: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Celebrates Birth of Critically Endangered Sumatran Tiger Cubs
They're renovating their dolphin exhibit in Epcot's 'The Seas: With Nemo and Friends' attraction and sent their 4 over to Sea World Orlando in August.
A hippo calf has been born to mother Tuma and father Henry. Disney's Animal Kingdom welcomes first baby hippo in 13 years
This statement is baffling. If India is interested in participating in the global breeding program, then I should think AZA accredited zoos would want to get on board. Especially as their animal collections start to look very similar, it would be a way to stand out. But I wanted to know if anybody has compiled a more recent species on exhibit list? The last one I found was from 2015.
You know, I heard that there was an aquarium setup at Epcot, but I didn’t have time to find the actual live exhibits when I was there.
If you ever go back to Epcot be sure to visit the Living Seas pavilion. They have a huge aquarium with sharks and many species of tropical fish. There is a manatee exhibit and several smaller exhibits with cephalopods, sea horses, etc.
Although it's an additional $30, Disney is now offering a behind the scenes tour, Caring for Giants, where you can get up close to the elephants: "During this 60-minute experience, you’ll meet with dedicated animal specialists who provide for the care and wellness of our African elephant herd. They’ll give you a glimpse into their day-to-day responsibilities as they provide fascinating facts about the elephants. African cultural representatives will also be on hand to share stories of Disney’s conservation efforts dedicated to the preservation of wild populations throughout their homeland. Throughout this experience, you’ll be able to observe the elephants from approximately 80 to 100 feet away—so you’ll enjoy a closer encounter with the elephants than you would during other in-park experiences." I saw photos on a Disney regular's blog and the giraffes are right behind the elephants and it looks like you could get some nice photos.
