Ramat Gan's elephant are indeed inbred.
Leon's father is Yossi (Timbo/Bahati), his mother is Yoki (YOSSI/Shara)...And Shara's father is Timbo too.

Yes I know, it's sad. She wasn't too old. She was only 35 years old.

    Some news... about birds!

3 Green arasari (Pteroglossus viridis) hatched.

The oldest Congo peafowl (Afropavo congensis) female laid some eggs recently.

2 Keas (Nestor notabilis) hatched however only one chick has survived. The one is going very well :).

And a new species has arrived! It's Pink-headed Fruit dove (Ptilinopus porphyreus) - a male.

Source is facebook page "Ptaszarnia Warszawskiego zoo".

A new aviary in the Bird House has been modernized and it's designed for a species of birds-of-paradise, the most probably is a king bird-of-paradise (Cicinnurus regius). The zoo is waiting for new residents.
The aviary is inhabited now by a pair of Beautiful Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus pulchellus) and Cinnamon ground-dove (Gallicolumba rufigula).

Source is PANDA foundation (of Warsaw zoo)

Bird of paradise would be big news! There is a global effort for captive-breeding birds from this family.

I did not know that Zoo Warsawa was eligible for these (those of f.i. Praha and Walsrode are part of this for superbs ...). Are these direct imports from Indonesia? Or do they get them from one of the established zoos?

Two scimitar-horned oryx were born (the younger one on 4th May).

Also on 22th April [at least] 4 cheetahs were born. Mother is Wilma, father - Fred. It's their second litter.

2 Vietnamese sika deer were born - both are females.

    And according birds-of-paradise...

Well, the post on linked facebook page says (after translation):
"The aviary refers to New Guinea forest and was designed for birds-of-paradise, however we don't know yet what species it will be. Probably it will be a king bird-of-paradise. Birds-of-paradise are exceptionally rare in zoological gardens, but thanks to good cooperation between zoos we have a chance for a pair of this species. We have to wait yet."

(and originally citation if somebody interested:
"Woliera nawiązuje do lasu deszczowego Nowej Gwinei i docelowo została zaprojektowana dla cudowronek, choć jeszcze nie wiemy jakiego gatunku. Prawdopodobnie będzie to latawiec królewski. Cudowronki (ptaki rajskie) są wyjątkowo rzadko spotykane w ogrodach zoologicznych, lecz dzięki dobrej współpracy między ogrodami, mamy szansę na parkę tego gatunku. Musimy jednak jeszcze trochę na nie poczekać.")

Unfortunately I don't know any other information than was written but I think if in Poland is a zoo which would be able/has the highest chances to import birds-of-paradise, it would be probably Warsaw.

So my fault, I wasn't aware, but truly I would have thought that Warsaw could get them first theoretically ;). But it is a great surprise so thank you for correcting me!

Many thanks for that Neva. I think that must be the first Snow Leopard birth reported in Europe. I would rush to the pub to celebrate - if only they were open!

Hemp oil trial for grieving elephant's stress
It's an interesting article about trying to see if elephants work with CBD oil to eliminate depression. They tries to do so with Fryderyka, who is having a hard time bearing the loss of her friend Erna.

While I understand their reasoning for such an experiment, I also doubt it is a good idea for this to become public knowledge.

One can easily think of the screeching headlines in certain media and the sensationalist outcries from the animal rights crowd: "Zoo drugs elephants", "Zoo gives animals weed" and so on.

This is probably also not going to curry the zoo much favor with regulators or government officials who oppose more liberal drug policies and medical marijuana.

Its actually starting to gain popularity in the states, with elephants in particular, but hasn't been announced.
