I'd like to start of a new thread with some good news:)
Keepers are celebrating the winter birth of a second Siamang Gibbon as parents Samson and Salome's family grows again, less than 2 years since the birth of mischievous Sultana. After some difficulty nursing a previous infant a few years ago, mum Salome has developed strong maternal skills and now has two healthy young infants to look after.

Little Sultana is already keen to play, but will have to wait a few months until the new addition will be strong enough to venture away from their mother to explore their enclosure together!

It's made me think. My son and his wife are expecing a second baby, their small daughter is called Clementine. If she had a sister, calling her 'Clementine' would continue the 'fruit' theme. Sorry, this is a frivolous comment and not a serious zoo-oriented one; just couldn't resist it.

Sorry, that didn't even make sense, wrote 'Clementine' when I meant to write 'Sultana'.

If they have a son I guess he would have to be Clement then.

The Ring-tailed Coati's have produced at least four pups.

    A Porcupine has been born.

Prairie Dogs and Lambs have also recently been born.

So their indoor Elephant accommodation will be the largest in Europe - it will be massive if it is bigger than the Cologne house .

Absolutely! I'm also very intrigued on how they plan to finance it if they're planning something the size and quality of Cologne.

'Largest indoor elephant house in Europe'. At Noah's Ark Zoo Farm. Really?

I'll believe it when I see it, quite frankly.

I wonder if the life long cat lover Ann Widdecombe would be so keen to lend her name and support to a zoo if she knew about the history of tigers which lived at this zoo several years ago and that the zoo owners tried to cover up where these animals came from?, a collection in the North East we were told on Michaela Strachan's television programme, I don't think so.

Yes it would be very strange seeing an Elephant House in the UK that can lose over 15 Elephants inside it,some how I don't think it will be happening at Noahs!!

I imagine it will be a similar situation to Woburn,....the plans will be grander than what they are eventually able to build.

Having said that though, I think the enclosure will be more likely to happen than establishing a cohesive herd. I don't think they will find it easy to source elephants other than perhaps some older individuals from circuses or 'problem', non-breeding individuals from other zoos. However, Longleat will clearly also be on the hunt for elephants of this kind over the next few years.

I would anticipate more movement should Noah's Ark change hands at some point after the house is built.

If they were able to get into Biaza again, I could actually see them taking on young bull elephants (assuming there is more than just hotwire outdoors). I think people assume that the days of seeing various collections holding small numbers of non-breeding animals are over, but I actually think more collections will become sites for holding one or two bull animals as breeding produces a surplus of captive males over time.

This is the one age group (young males) that are being produced and frequently needing new homes. There is a parallel with surplus male Gorillas-new 'bachelor' groups are popping up all over Europe(and including Longleat soon also) and I think elephant- breeding Zoos have similar need to place their home-bred males.

But I find it difficult to get my head round the idea of a wildlife park like Noah's with some quite basic enclosures, suddenly becoming a major elephant centre though- how on earth will they be able to afford such a build?

mmm. If they were Amish it would be different- they are good at Barn building ;) (all the neighbouring folk come over and the Men raise a barn while the womenfolk lay up the Picnic).

Not sure that would happen in Clevedon though....
